PPS High School. Thank you for your interest in
this program, and please always drive safely and
courteously.
2So You Want To Be A Licensed Driver
- Youre about to celebrate your 15th birthday,
which means you have been studying your Oregon
DMV Drivers Manual. You are anxious for the day
your parents will take you to the DMV office, and
your efforts will earn you a passing score on the
test to get your driving permit. This step will
get you on the road, towards your Provisional
Drivers License.

4Parents Get Involved
- Now that you have your permit, your parents will
give you the opportunity to drive the family
vehicle.
5What about taking a Driver Education course?
- Portland Public Schools offers a program which
includes, the 30 hour classroom phase and the
behind the wheel phase. The behind the wheel
phase includes twelve hours in the Simulator and
six hours in a Drivers Education vehicle.
6What will you learn in the 30 hour class?
- Just about everything you could need to know, so
as to develop attitudes, and critical thinking,
to become a safe and responsible driver,
passenger, and pedestrian in the ever
increasingly complex environment of the
transportation system.
7What will you learn in the Behind the Wheel
phaseof the program?
- You will have 12 hours in a very safe driving
environment, its called a Driving Simulator.
You will receive verbal instruction, as you drive
with video films that place you in the drivers
seat.
8You will have a minimum of three hours driving on
the street, and three hours observing.
- The behind the wheel lessons begin in the parking
lot, each lesson will progress at a steady rate.
The parent must be aware that if a student is
lacking in experience, the parent will need to
provide additional practice between each lesson,
so the student will not fall behind.
9New concepts are being taught in Drivers
Education
- Hand placement on the steering wheel at 800 and
400 - Push/pull or shuffle steering
- Targeting
- ABS braking
- Keeping the vehicle in balance
10Upon completion, a Certificate with the State of
Oregon seal attached, will be issued
- A Certificate of completion with the official
state seal will be issued upon the student
successfully completing both phases of the
program. The PPS Traffic Safety, Drivers
Education program is accredited by the Department
of Transportation.
