MAIN STREET TROLLEY MEMPHIS
- 1865 Mule-drawn trolleys first carry passengers
along Main Street. - 1891 The City Suburban Railway launches
electric trolleys on seven miles of track. - 1900 Newly formed Memphis Street Railway Company
(MSRC) employs 212 electric cars, eventually
puts 300 trolleys in operation over 13 routes. - 1947 MSRC makes its final trolley run here. The
city pulls up tracks that once ran along Main,
Broad, Jackson, Madison, and other streets. - 1989 Mayor Plans to bring trolleys back to
downtown Memphis. Sample car, on loan from Iowa,
is a hit with riders. - 1993 Trolleys begin rolling along Main Street
Mall. "This will be the synergy for a new
renaissance in Memphis," says Mayor Willie
Herenton.

- 1994 MATA adds seventh car, larger version
holding 100 passengers. - 1995 Ridership tops 1 million. MATA adds more
cars. - 1997 New 2.5-mile Riverfront loop opens.
Ridership reaches about 500,000 annually, less
than projected. - 1998 North End MATA trolley/bus terminal opens.
Renovation proceeds at Central Station. Total
cost to system to date 72.9 million. - 1999 Federal Transportation Administration
assures 80 percent federal funding of 30.4
million Medical Center extension, to be completed
in 2002.

On-board survey of streetcar riders - 1994
- 51 percent were riding for transportation-related
reasons and 49 percent for entertainment-related
reasons - 17 percent "normally get around Memphis" by
public transit - 61 percent had "eaten at restaurants along the
trolley line," and 34 percent had "shopped at
stores along the trolley line" and - 36 had incomes over 50,000 a total of 14
percent had incomes below 20,000.

FLEET
Service is provided with 14 rehabilitated (1927
-1940)cars imported primarily from Portugal and
Australia and one replica car. A number of other
cars are also on the property in various stages
of rebuild. There are six single-truck cars from
Oporto, Portugal, seven double-truck cars from
Melbourne Australia, a single- truck Gomaco
replica car, and a double-truck car rebuilt by
MATA from a former Rio de Janeiro open car. All
of the cars are painted in a unique paint scheme.
