Module 4 Using Encyclopedias
  • In this session, you find out
  • How to identify the different sections of an
    encyclopedia, and
  • How to use and identify information in an
    encyclopedia.

3
Encyclopedias
  • Can be used to find information about almost any
    topic. You will find
  • written information
  • maps
  • charts
  • photographs
  • drawings

4
Using Encyclopedias
  • Encyclopedias are arranged alphabetically.
  • That means you would choose the "B" volume for
    information about Bahrain or Beirut.

5
Encyclopedia Index
  • In general encyclopedias, the index is usually a
single volume which will direct you very quickly
to the exact pages you need. Using the index is
often a quick way to find the information you
    need.

6
Locating Information Quickly
  • You don't have to read the entire article.
  • Encyclopedia articles are designed to be scanned
quickly for key information. That's why they
include sub-headings and "fast facts" or "facts
    in brief."

7
Fast Facts
These are lists of key information.
  • This example tells us that the UAE's capital is
Abu Dhabi, its estimated population is 2.5
million, and its "chief products" include
    petroleum.
