Title: SBS Personalities Primer
1SBS Personalities Primer
2Welcome!
Our intent is to make you a star!
The model for SBS Personalities is ESPN
Personalities. Before ESPN, no one knew of any
of their TV or web or magazine talent.
Similarly, were growing our own celebrities,
and thats you. It all starts with a simple
process

4Making The SBS WebLog Work Part
OneCulture
The objective from a personnel and work
perspective is to create an environment thats
fun for you. Let me explain our evolving
corporate culture. Its independent, and
collaborative and supportive. Were small, so
the relationships are more like family. Everyone
is expected to do two things communicate and
contribute. If you are talking or calling,
even if its just to say Im swamped with
another project, so I need help, or I cant get
to XYZ today, thats better than no
communication at all. At SBS, no communication
is a no-no. Were in the communications
business, so weve got to enjoy connecting with
each other. Besides, we like to talk.
5Making The SBS WebLog Work Part Two Intent and
Strategy
- The intent is to build an online community of
bloggers, each with their own web page, and all
paying contributors to SBS. - What separates SBS Personalities from the other
member with blog pages is that SBS promotes them.
- The overall strategy is for SBS Personalities
to act as catalysts for the construction of the
SBS Web Log Community. - Thats done by
- Writing,
- Inviting others.
- Promotion by SBS.
6Making The SBS WebLog Work Part TwoIntent and
Strategy (2)
SBS Personalities can help build the community,
not only by inviting their friends, but by
referring to the blogs of the other SBS
Personalities. This encourages a sharing of
traffic, and causes the reader to move from page
to page in the system. At this time, its not
a good idea to refer to blogs outside of the SBS
system. We want to keep the traffic internal to
our environment. The only exception is if you
know someone whos willing to share links. As
your blogs and traffic build, our search engine
rating increases, making us more attractive, and
drawing more people.
7Making The SBS WebLog Work Part TwoIntent and
Strategy (3)
A simple way to quickly build traffic to your
blog is to e-mail a set of friends with the link
to your blog and another link to our SBS WebLog
inviting them to start their own sports-blog,
and ask them to pass it on. Its called
viral marketing. Well provide you with the
links for this. On the matter of e-mails,
well provide you with your own
youremail_at_sportsbusinesssims.com e-mail
address.
8Making The SBS WebLog Work Part
Three Style
SBS wants to see the SBS Personalities develop a
common style, but not at the expense of the
individual approach of each writer. Here are
some common points 1 . Please avoid the use
of cuss words in your writing. 2. Try to
write short paragraphs, rather than long ones
that express more than one basic idea. 3.
Check your spelling. 4. Whenever possible,
when writing either an article or an
opinion piece, get quotes from people or use
stats. 5. Dont invent characters and present
them as real. 6. If there is a good example of
a columnist for this, Herb Caens three-dot
journalism wins. Its a great and efficient way
to mix news, opinion, and gossip.
9Making The SBS WebLog Work Part
Three Style (2)
- Second set of common points
- Be sure to add short, catchy titles to your
work. - Also, make sure to use photos, when you can and
where it is appropriate. Some types of pictures
we cant use if we dont own them. Its best to
check with SBS EVP of Corporate Design Kristin
Herrera on this matter. (kristin_at_sportsbusinesssim
s.com) - Length generally between 400 words and 1,000
words for a column are best for articles between
1,000 and 2,500 words. - Advice pick one team and know that one well.
Dont try to know everything at once. Pick a
small set of issues, and focus on them. -
