  • Project Homeless Connect (PHC) Challenge Talking
    Points
  • Id like to tell you about a new element of our
employee giving program this year- its a
partnership with the mayor of San Francisco and
thousands of other citizens like yourself to
bring about real change in our local community.
  • Its simple, its fun, you can get some cool
incentive prizes, and youll have the chance to
be part of a bigger team, and perhaps a slice of
historyIts called the Project Homeless Connect
    Challenge!!
  • Each year, more homeless die on the streets of
San Francisco than Chicago and New York City put
    together
  • There are over 6000 homeless on any given day in
    San Francisco 3000 chronically homeless
  • Clearly- our old way of dealing with this issue
    isnt working!
  • Shelters dont work- we need to get these folks
into long term housing with supportive services
    (fact proven around the country)
  • Expecting homeless individuals and families to go
all over town to find and leverage the services
available to them doesnt workwe need to work
together to consolidate services, help these
    people to help themselves
  • One of Mayor Newsoms favorite quotes is if you
keep doing what youre doing, youll get what
youve got This is a problem we can change- we
now have the plan and the vehicle, we just need
    your support!!
  • Project Homeless Connect will be celebrating its
one-year anniversary in Oct. 2005. Phil Mangano,
US Executive Director of Interagency Council on
    Homelessness (Bushs Homelessness Czar- Whats
happening in San Francisco is unprecedented-
there is nothing else like it in the country.
This is the beginning of the end of homelessness
  •
  • To date PHC has mobilized thousands of volunteers
and forged new partnerships among government,
citizens, corporations and non-profits to address
    the long-standing issue of homelessness.
  • Project Homeless Connect represents a new
paradigm as an initiative to engage the general
    public towards innovative solutions to
    homelessness.
  • Every other month the Bill Graham Civic center is
transformed into a one stop shop consolidating
available products and services and connect
individuals to benefits, medical care, substance
abuse and mental health counseling and a variety
of social services which can help lead to
pathways to housing and self sufficiency. Its
    customer-oriented approach has proven itself
effective at helping these people who need help
    the most.
  • As of Sept. over 5300 homeless clients had been
    served
  • Now we need your help to take PHC to the next
level. You can be part of this groundbreaking,
    grassroots effort to resolve chronic
homelessness. You can make a difference!

  • Sample Project Homeless Connect Challenge Talking
    Points-Cont.
  • In addition to volunteering (fill in with Dec
8th date or other volunteer parameters)
  • The mayor has put out a challengeIf we can raise
2.5 million dollars a year for the next two
years, the city will match these funds dollar for
dollar. 100 of these funds will go directly
toward creating 450 units of long-term housing
with supportive services. This is part of our 10
    year plan to end homelessness
  • We know that you have a lot of great
organizations that you support in your annual
    giving.
  • This year Id like to urge you to give a little
extra- 100 (throw out numbers appropriate to
    your audience)
  • Heres your chance to be part of something
bigger- that has demonstrated that it can produce
    results
  • Heres our chance to pull together collectively
as a community- across companies, neighborhoods,
sectors, faiths, etc- To collectively own this
issue and collectively own its solution- Each of
us really can make a difference.
  • Right here, right now- lets change those stats
and bring an end to chronic homelessness in San
    Francisco

Dear Name of Company colleagueI am pleased
to announce an exciting new opportunity that
enhances our employee giving campaign. As many of
you have heard by now, theres a buzz surrounding
San Franciscos innovative approach to tackling
the issue of homelessness.Project Homeless
Connect (PHC) started in October 2004 with Mayor
Newsoms conviction that when concerned citizens
start taking action to solving homelessness,
great things can happen. And with 3,000
chronically homeless San Franciscans, its no
longer enough for us to turn a blind eye to our
fellow citizens sleeping in our streets. This is
an issue that affects all of usand Mayor
Newsoms solution to engage local citizens,
community agencies and companies like ours are
proving to make the difference that is felt
around the country. The Director for the Federal
Intercouncil Agency on Homelessness, Phil
Mangano, stated, San Franciscos efforts are
unprecedented anywhere in the countrywhat youre
doing here is the beginning of the end of
homelessness. Mangano has initiated a national
Project Homeless Connect day on December 8th
modeled after our Citys work.Id like to ask
you to consider designating your contribution
gift through Goodwill Industries, Attention
Project Homeless Connect (PHCs charitable arm).
Any amount is appreciated and will help PHCs
goal of housing 450 people within the next two
years. With the need to raise 2.5M each year for
the next two years, every dollar is criticaland
needed. The City will be matching these funds on
a dollar-for-dollar basis. The challenge is
out. Youll be hearing more from Campaign
Manager/Community Involvement Director on the
progress being made and the various ways were
helping. And with name of companys strong
tradition of supporting our communities, we can
make a difference. Thank you for your
consideration.Sincerely,Name of

Sample Colleague Letter
Dear Deloitte colleague On June 3rd, Deloittes
national day of volunteerism, our Bay area
employees participated in the largest IMPACT Day
site in the country at San Franciscos Project
Homeless Connect (PHC). Created to help solve San
Franciscos homeless problem, Mayor Newsoms
vision has become a national best practice of
engaging community agencies, concerned citizens
and corporations to work together. The
Executive Director for the Federal Intercouncil
Agency on Homelessness, Phil Mangano, stated,
San Franciscos efforts are unprecedented
anywhere in the countrywhat youre doing here is
the beginning of the end of homelessness.
Mangano has initiated a national Project Homeless
Connect day on December 8th modeled after our
Citys work. Through your efforts, Deloitte has
donated new sweatshirts to PHCs clients, written
a software program designed to track clients
going through PHC and provided the human
capitalemployee volunteersto fuel this
initiative. And now, during the start of our
employee giving campaign, Im asking you to
consider continuing your support of PHC and the
valuable work its doing. By earmarking either
your full pledge or a portion of your gift, you
will be helping to move PHC to its next
levelobtaining permanent and supportive housing
for people living on our streets. Our goal is to
house 450 of the most fragile of the 3000
chronically homeless within the next two years.
To do this, we will need to raise 2.5M each year
for the next two years. These funds will be
matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis by City
Hall. Currently, you can either designate your
gift through our United Way Way site under
Goodwill Industries/Project Homeless Connect or
directly through the PHC website. All gifts are
much appreciated with heartfelt thanks. If you
are unable to donate money, but still want to
help, volunteering on a PHC is truly a fulfilling
experience. Its even been voted the best
volunteer opportunity by San Francisco magazine.
Whether you pledge a contribution, or volunteer
at PHCyour compassion and generosity make an
impact. Sincerely Juliana Deans NorPac Director
of Community Involvement
