What is Rehabilitation??
  • Vocational rehabilitation (VR)
  • Federal legislation establishing the civilian
    rehabilitation program goes back to 1920 with the
    Smith-Fess Act
  • Our raison detre is assisting people with
    disabilities in obtaining employment
  • However, like most human service professions, we
    have expanded into many different areas of
    service provision

  • 600 clock hour internship experience

Public Sector
  • Referred to as the State/federal system
  • Feds kick in most of the funding (80-20 ratio),
    but the program is administered by each state
  • All 50 states participate
  • In Maryland the agency is the
  • Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS)

Private not-for-profit
  • Community agencies whose primary mission is to
    provide services to people with disabilities or
    other social disadvantages
  • These agencies may specialize in providing
    services to people with
  • Psychiatric disabilities
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Vision Impairments
  • Hearing Impairments

  • Many of these community agencies have familiar
    names

  • Interact with legal and insurance industries
  • Rehabilitation companies usually contract with
    insurance providers to try and get injured
    workers back to work as quickly and in as cost
    effective a manner as possible

Salaries
  • State/Federal system (with Masters)
  • 30,000 to 35,000 starting
  • 45,000 to 48,000 after 5 years
  • Higher level supervisory and administrative
    positions, of course, will pay more

  • Wide variation
  • With 5 years of experience and increased
    responsibility 45,000

  • Plus bonuses, based upon productivity
  • Thus, annual compensation can be over 50,000

  • A wide range of undergraduate degrees may provide
    appropriate preparation for graduate study in
    Rehabilitation Counseling. Prerequisite
    undergraduate coursework should include

Application Procedures
  • Telephone, email, fax, or mail a request for
    graduate information to the Department of
    Rehabilitation Services Graduate Program
  • Send application materials, official college
    transcripts and letters of recommendation to the
    Graduate School
  • A notice of the applicants status will be mailed
    within 30 days of receipt of all information
