• He got his first piano lessons at age 6 and music
  just carried with him ever since.
• Duke began playing music professionally in
  Washington, D.C. in 1917. His piano technique was
  influenced by stride piano players like James P.
  Johnson, and Willie "The Lion" Smith.

What was his effect on the New Negro era
during the 1920s in Harlem

• He was the bandleader and the composer at the
  Cotton Club in Harlem.
• He brought a new style of music to this up and
  coming city of Harlem.
• That helped influence the way the
  African-Americans carried themselves in Harlem.

Why did jazz music become so popular during the
Harlem Renaissance?

• It was a new style and flavor of blended music
  that people have never heard.
• Also during those times people need something
  that would boost their spirit.

By and large, jazz has always been like the kind
of a man you wouldn't want your daughter to
associate with.
