5Marks of A Christian
- Humble
- Contrite (right heart before the Lord)
- Gentle (Kind)
- Righteous
- Merciful
- Pure in Heart
- Peaceful
- Willing to stand and suffer for what they believe
6Beatitudes
- The word Beatitudes comes from a Latin word
beatis -blessed - each one starts with the word blessed
- The beatitudes represent a pattern, a picture of
- who the blessed ones of God are
- how we can recognize them
- their reward.
7Now and a then pattern
- Blessed are those who are poor in spirit now for
in the future they will receive the kingdom of
heaven. - Blessed are those who mourn now, for in the
future they will be comforted. - Blessed are the meek now for in the future they
will inherit the earth. - And so we see this pattern.
- Now there is one thing .but in the future there
will be something else.
8Beatitudes (themes)
- Righteousness
- We must maintain the right attitude and belief
system. - As a result of maintaining the right attitude and
beliefs we will eventually receive these things
from God - Perseverance
- If we persevere in this life, there will be
blessings and rewards to come. - Your blessings are not always immediate.
- There is this sense that in this life there will
be struggles and issues to deal with. - Holiness
- Living unlike the world shows who we are
9Poor in Spirit
- Contrite means-not overly proud, but humble.
- Somebody whos spirit is not full of pride but
knows his position with God. - He also feels unworthiness because of his sin.
- He doesnt boast or brag and isnt proud.
- His heart is broken because of sin. His
10Isaiah 662
- Has not my hand made all these things, and so
they came into being? declares the Lord. This
is the one I esteem he who is humble and
contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word. - Knowing that God made us should cause us to
respect Him. This is the beginning of wisdom.
11Jesus Models Humility
- He calls Himself by a third-party name (the Son
of Man) - He didnt brag about how great He was, how
powerful He was and how much God loved Him. - He realized He is subject to the Fathers will.
- He became an example for us. Blessed are those
who recognize their place with God and are humble
and contrite about that position. - Humility means that we diminish our will so that
He may have His will.
12Philippians 25-11
- 5Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
Jesus, 6who, being in the form of God, did not
consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but
made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of
a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
8And being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself and became obedient to the point
of death, even the death of the cross. 9Therefore
God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the
name which is above every name, 10that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in
heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under
the earth, 11and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father.
13Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted.
- Times of mourning come for all people
- loss of loved one
- loss of possessions
- loses of relationships
- loss of self
14II Corinthians 13-5
- Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the
God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our
troubles, so that we can comfort those in any
trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God. For just as the sufferings of
Christ flow over into our lives, so also through
Christ our comfort overflows.
15The God of All Comfort
- Those who mourn will be comforted.
- Our God is The God of all comfort.
- He gives comfort to us even though we suffer many
trials and persecutions. - When Jesus was about to leave, He said that He
would send us a Comforter. - Therefore, blessed are those who mourn in this
life, those who struggle and suffer especially
for Jesus. - He will send them the Holy Spirit to comfort
them. - They will be comforted.
- Thats a wonderful promise because the Holy
Spirit is the seal of salvation unto God.
16Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
earth.
- Meek means kind or gentle
- If a person is meek, he doesnt try to be in the
forefront or try to be recognized. - He is quiet and humble and on the sidelines so to
speak. - Jesus was meek.
- He didnt try to exert His power over others.
- He simply spoke truth in love and people
responded..Hmmmmm!
17What are the meek inheriting?
- II Peter 38-15
- But do not forget this one thing, dear friends
With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and
a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not
slow in keeping his promise, as some understand
slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting
anyone to perish, but everyone to come to
repentance. But the day of the Lord will come
like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a
roar the elements will be destroyed by fire, and
the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
Since everything will be destroyed in this way,
what kind of people ought you to be? You ought
to live holy and godly lives as you look forward
to the day of God and speed its coming. That day
will bring about the destruction of the heavens
by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
But in keeping with his promise we are looking
forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home
of the righteousness. So then, dear friends,
since you are looking forward to this, make every
effort to be found spotless, blameless and at
peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lords
patience means salvation, just as our dear
brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that
God gave him. - The point is, the meek will inherit the new
earth, the one that is coming. The present one
will be destroyed by fire.
18Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
- What does that mean?
- to want righteousness so much that without it you
would die. - It becomes the focus of your life.
- You have to have righteousness to live.
- To live righteously means to live rightly. You do
that which is right. - In the old English it means to live wisely.
19Repentance
- Those who believe in Jesus are declared righteous
because Jesus completely fulfilled Gods will. - However, even though we have Jesus
righteousness, He still calls us to live a
righteous life, a lifestyle that is right
according to Scripture
20I Timothy 611-12
- But you, man of God, flee from all this, and
pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of
the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to
which you were called when you made your good
confession in the presence of many witnesses.
21What is the Standard?
- Jesus calls us to live a righteous life, a
lifestyle that is right according to Scripture. - The Standard is not
- our ideals
- What society dictates
- What we see on TV
- It is the Word of God
22How?
- Romans 310
- There is none righteous, no, not one
- 11 There is none who understands
- There is none who seeks after God.
- 12 They have all turned aside
- They have together become unprofitable
- There is none who does good, no, not one.
23Romans 512-19
- 12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered
the world, and death through sin, and thus death
spread to all men, because all sinned13(For
until the law sin was in the world, but sin is
not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless
death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those
who had not sinned according to the likeness of
the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him
who was to come. 15But the free gift is not like
the offense. For if by the one mans offense many
died, much more the grace of God and the gift by
the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded
to many. 16And the gift is not like that which
came through the one who sinned. For the judgment
which came from one offense resulted in
condemnation, but the free gift which came from
many offenses resulted in justification. 17For if
by the one mans offense death reigned through
the one, much more those who receive abundance of
grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign
in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) - 18Therefore, as through one mans offense
judgment came to all men, resulting in
condemnation, even so through one Mans righteous
act the free gift came to all men, resulting in
justification of life. 19For as by one mans
disobedience many were made sinners, so also by
one Mans obedience many will be made righteous.
24Righteousnessthe fruit of repentance
- John 151-8
- 1I am the true vine, and My Father is the
vinedresser. 2Every branch in Me that does not
bear fruit He takes away and every branch that
bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more
fruit. 3You are already clean because of the word
which I have spoken to you. 4Abide in Me, and I
in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of
itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can
you, unless you abide in Me. - 5I am the vine, you are the branches. He who
abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit for
without Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does
not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and
is withered and they gather them and throw them
into the fire, and they are burned. 7If you abide
in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask
what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
8By this My Father is glorified, that you bear
much fruit so you will be My disciples.
25They will be filled
- They will be made completely righteous and find
forgiveness - They will be fulfilled
- Righteousness brings peace
- Unrighteousness brings guilt and fear
26Blessed are the merciful
- Matthew 913
- I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
- From Hosea 66-Israel the Harlot
- God gave the sacrificial system to help us see
the need for mercy. But His desire was to show
us mercy. If we can show people mercy, then we
will be shown mercy. When the day comes when we
stand before God, we want to be shown mercy.
27No Mercy-is Expensive
- Matthew 613-14
- 14For if you forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if
you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither
will your Father forgive your trespasses.
28Shown Mercy
- If we show mercy, then we will be shown mercy now
and at judgement. - When we fail to have mercy, we are not acting out
of love. - Love demands mercy.
- Mercy is treating someone as if they never
committed the crime they deserve to be punished
for.
29Some Situations that Demand Mercy
- Abuse
- Divorce
- Murder
- Character Assassination
- Homosexuality
30Can You have mercy on people in these categories?
- The more you can show mercy, the more you are
like God. - Luke 747
- 47Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are
many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to
whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.
31The Pure in Heart
- Being pure in heart means serving God out of the
right motives. - It doesnt mean that you never have bad thoughts.
But that when you serve God its because you
love Him and want to please Him. - You dont do these things because they are
expected. You truly want to follow His ways
32Philippians 214-17
- 14Do all things without complaining and
disputing, 15that you may become blameless and
harmless, children of God without fault in the
midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among
whom you shine as lights in the world, 16holding
fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in
the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or
labored in vain.
33They Shall See God
- To see God is to know Him in every way.
- 1 John 32-3
- 2Beloved, now we are children of God and it has
not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we
know that when He is revealed, we shall be like
Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3And everyone
who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just
as He is pure.
34Peacemakers
- He is a God of Peace
- His Message is one of peace
- He calls us to make peace
- Peace is our Guardian
- He is our peace
35He is a God of Peace
- 1 Corinthians 143
- 3For God is not the author of confusion but of
peace, as in all the churches of the saints. - 2 Thessalonians 316
- 16Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you
peace always in every way. The Lord be with you
all.
36His Message is one of peace
- Romans 51
- Therefore, having been justified by faith, we
have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, 2through whom also we have access by
faith into this grace in which we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God
37Romans 1015
- 5And how shall they preach unless they are sent?
As it is written - How beautiful are the feet of those who preach
the gospel of peace, - Who bring glad tidings of good things!
38He calls us to make peace
- Romans 1419
- 19Therefore let us pursue the things which make
for peace and the things by which one may edify
another. - Hebrews 1214
- 14Pursue peace with all people, and holiness,
without which no one will see the Lord - Romans 1218
- 18If it is possible, as much as depends on you,
live peaceably with all men.
39Peace guards our hearts and minds
- Philippians 46-7
- Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by
prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to God 7and the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and minds through Christ
Jesus.
40He is our Peace
- Ephesians 214-18
- 4For He Himself is our peace, who has made both
one, and has broken down the middle wall of
separation, 15having abolished in His flesh the
enmity, that is, the law of commandments
contained in ordinances, so as to create in
Himself one new man from the two, thus making
peace, 16and that He might reconcile them both to
God in one body through the cross, thereby
putting to death the enmity. 17And He came and
preached peace to you who were afar off and to
those who were near. 18For through Him we both
have access by one Spirit to the Father.
41Sons of God
- If he is a God of Peace and
- Jesus is the Prince and King of Peace
- Who brought The Gospel of Peace,
- then ..
- His sons will be known by their peace
- the peace they have
- the peace they make
42Persecuted for Righteousness
- Matthew 511
- Blessed are you when they revile and persecute
you, and say all kinds of evil against you
falsely for My sake. 12Rejoice and be exceedingly
glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so
they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
43Romans 816-19
- 16The Spirit Himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17and if
children, then heirsheirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that
we may also be glorified together. - 18For I consider that the sufferings of this
present time are not worthy to be compared with
the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19For
the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly
waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
44The Kingdom of Heaven
- Heaven is the hope of those who suffer because
there is no suffering there. - Revelation 22-4
- Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a
loud voice from heaven saying, Behold, the
tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell
with them, and they shall be His people. God
Himself will be with them and be their God. 4And
God will wipe away every tear from their eyes
there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor
crying. There shall be no more pain, for the
former things have passed away.
45Conclusion
- In this life, we can not trust in
- relationships, wealth, possessions, revenge,
accomplishments, our abilities, or anything else
to make us blessed and happy. - We can trust in God to bless us and make us happy
because our minds have been changed to understand
eternal truth. Knowing the Truth sets us free.
