- Hockey-like game played in the early 1800s in
Nova Scotia by Micmac Indians - Mainly influenced by the Irish game of hurling
- The rink, originally came from the game curling
in the 18th century Scotland - Early hockey games allowed up to 30 players on
the ice at one time - The goals were two stones

- The first use of a puck instead of a ball was
recorded in Ontario, 1860 - Rules were set by students of McGill University,
in Montreal in 1879 - Several amateurs clubs and leagues were
established in Canada by late 1880s - First played in the U.S. in 1893
- The game had been spread to other parts of Europe
and Great Britain by the 20th Century

5Penalties
- Referee or Linesman makes the calls of the game
- High-sticking, hand pass, goal cage dislodged,
puck leaving the ice surface, or if a player is
injured - there are different categories of penalties
minor and bench minor, double minor, major,
misconduct, game misconduct, match, and penalty
shot

- Minor and bench penalties 2 minutes
- Double minor 4 minutes
- Major 5 minutes
- Misconduct 10 minutes, and a Game misconduct
results in balance of game and one game
suspension - Match balance of game plus indefinite suspension
and 5 minute major - Penalty shot no time served
7NHL Rule Changes
- An assessment of NHL rules changes for the
2005-06 season. - More penalties, meaning there will be no
tolerance for hooking, holding, slashing,
tripping and cross checking - Tie games will be decided by a shoot out
- Two line pass is legal, with the long pass
defending the neutral zone is harder - Goaltenders cannot handle the puck behind the
goal line, except in restricted areas - More room inside the blue lines, reducing the
neutral zone
