    Rhein-Main-Flughafen, is located near Frankfurt
am Main. It is the largest airport in Germany and

Frankfurt am Main Central Station
  • Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof (usually
translated from German as Frankfurt (Main)
Central Station, short form Frankfurt (Main)
Hbf) is the most important Station for Frankfurt
am Main and is one of the largest terminal
stations in Europe. On August 18, 1888, after
five years of construction, the Central-Bahnhof

evening of the opening day, a train ran over the
buffer stop and the locomotive was damaged.

Römer
  • The Römer (German for "Roman") is medieval
building in Frankfurt am Main, one of the city's
most important landsmarks. It has been the city
hall or Rathaus for 600 years. The Haus Römer is
actually the middle building of a set of three
located in the Römerberg plaza. The Römer
merchant family sold it together with a second
building, the Goldener Schwan (Golden Swan), to
the city council on March 11, 1405 and it was
converted for use as the city hall.
  • The Römer is not a museum and is actually used
by the city for various purposes, for example as
a Standesamt or civil registration office for
example, the wedding rooms are located in the
first and second floor of the Haus Löwenstein.

Old Opera House
  • The famous old opera house (Alte Oper) was
built in 1880 by the architect Richard Lucae. It
was one of the major opera houses in Germany,
until it was heavily damaged in World War II.
Until the late 1970ies it was a ruin, nicknamed
"Germany's Most Beautiful Ruin". There were even
efforts to just blow it up former Frankfurt Lord
Mayor Rudi Arndt called for blowing it up in the
1960ies, which made him get nicknamed
    "Dynamit-Rudi" by the locals.
  • Fortunately, due to citizen's pressure it
was finally fully reconstructed and reopened in
1981. The old opera house is now a concert hall.

Saint Paul's Church
  • St. Paul's Church (Paulskirche) is a
national historic monument in Germany with great
political symbolism, because it was the seat of
the first democratically elected Parliament in
1848. It was established in 1789 as a Protestant
church but wasnt completed until 1833. The
church has its importance in the roots of the
Frankfurt Parliament, which met in St. Pauls
during the revolutionary years of 1848/49 in
order to write a constitution for a united
Germany. The attempt failed because the monarchs
of Russia and Austria did not want to lose power,
and in 1849 Russian troops ended the democratic
experiment by force of arms and the parliament
was dissolved. Afterwards, the building was used
    for church services again.
  • St. Paul's was partially destroyed in World
War II, particularly the interior of the
building, which now has a modern
  • appearance. It would quickly and
    symbolically
  • rebuilt after the war. Today it is not used
    for
  • religious services, but mainly for
    exhibitions
  • and events.

Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral
  • Saint Bartholomeus Cathedral (Dom
Sankt Bartholomäus) is a Gothic building located
    in Frankfurt.
  • Frankfurt Cathedral is the main church of
Frankfurt and was constructed in the 14th and
15th centuries on the foundation of an earlier
church from the Merovingian time. From 1356
onwards, kings of the Holy Roman Empire were
elected in this church, and from 1562 to 1792,
emperors were crowned here. It has been
recognized as symbol for the national unity of
Germany, especially during the 19th century.
Although it has never been a bishop's seat, its
role in imperial politics made the church to one
of the most important buildings of Imperial
history and justified the use of the term
(imperial) cathedral by the people of Frankfurt
for the church since the 18th century.
  • In 1867, the cathedral was destroyed by
a fire and rebuilt in its present style.
  • Between October 1943 and March 1944 the old
town of Frankfurt, the biggest old Gothic town of
Central Europe had been destroyed by six
bombardments of the Allied Forces. The physical
devastation of the old imperial town should break
the will to war in the population. The greatest
losses occurred on the 22nd of March 1944. Over
one thousand buildings of the old town, the most
of them being half-timbered houses were
destroyed. The cathedral suffered from severe
damage and the interior burned out completely.
The cathedral had been reconstructed in the
1950s. The height of the cathedral is 95 m.

Taunus
  • Taunus is a mountain range in Hessen. It is
bounded by the river valleys of Rheine, Main and
Lahn. On the opposite side of the Rhein, the
mountains are continued by the Hunsrück. The
mountains themselves span the districts of
    Hochtaunuskreis, Main-Taunus, Rheingau-Taunus,
    and Rhein-Lahn.
  • Not to be confused with more famous and
higher Feldberg in Black Forest, the highest peak
is Großer Feldberg (878 m, which was also used
    for Feldbergrennen hillclimbing contest and
rallying stages. It is followed by Kleiner
Feldberg and Altkönig (798 m) with the remains of
a late Iron Age hill fort (La-Tène A, ca. 400 BC)
    near the summit.
  • The Roman Limes was built across the
Taunus. The Saalburg, a restored Roman castellum,
now houses a museum. After the fall of the Limes
(in 259/260 AD), the Alamanni settled here. For
this reason there are some Alemannic cemeteries
in the southern foothills of the Taunus
(Eschborn). This area became Frankish after the
