  • Backpacking is a great way to spend time outside
    doing a physical workout during any season.
  • Whether you are a novice or an experienced hiker,
    the trail requires planning ahead.

Where do you want to go today?
  • Just like any outside excursion or sport, it
    requires you to prepare and think ahead.
  • Ex If you were going to go skiing, when and
    where are you going, and what will you need?
  • The trail, time, and weather, are only a few of
    the factors that can affect how you should plan
    out your hike.

Where are you going?
  • Which trail or mountain you want to hike is
    ultimately what you need to plan around.
  • Make sure to pick a trail, or a series of peaks
    that are within your experience level.
  • Doing some prior research of the region you are
    hiking is a good idea.

What is the itinerary?
  • For an itinerary, the important things to cover
    are
  • The time you are planning on leaving, arriving,
    and an estimate on when you might finish.
  • The mountain or trail that you will be at.
  • It is a good idea to inform someone else with
    this information, incase something should
    happen.

What equipment will I need?
  • The equipment that you will bring will vary to
    the following
  • Weather.
  • Duration of your outing. Bedding, cooking
    necessities and proper water purification may
    vary.
  • Necessities to keep in mind are the following
  • Proper clothing.
  • Nourishment.
  • Guidance.

Clothing.
  • The clothing you will need will vary with the
    weather.
  • On top of the peaks can be cool
  • Wind pants, pull over or long sleeve shirt, a
    hat.
  • Proper footwear, such as sturdy hiking boots are
    key.
  • KEEP IT LIGHT WEIGHT!

Food and hydration.
  • Food will also vary on the duration of your
    hike.
  • Day hikes, bring a bag lunch.
  • Weekend or longer, prepare a food plan and the
    proper utensils.
  • Keep calories in mind for energy.
  • Bring water, stay hydrated all the time, EVEN IN
    COOL WEATHER!
  • Iodine tablets, or a water purifier is a good
    idea, water safety cannot be guaranteed.

Guidance.
  • If you have no prior experience or knowledge of
    where you are hiking, it is a good idea to read
    up on it.
  • Things to look for
  • Trail conditions, topography, etc.
  • Water sources.
  • Location.
  • Remember, it is a good idea to bring a map, and
    compass, it never hurts.
