4Some Definitions
- Published the manuscript is in print in a
journal. - In press the manuscript has been formally
accepted for publication, but the issue has not
yet been printed and distributed. - Submitted you have sent in a manuscript for
review by a journal and it is under consideration
for publication.
5Guidelines - Research Section
- The grid will be included in the letter exactly
as you submit it, aside from minor editing, once
the information is verified. - It includes research papers and abstracts done
while you were in medical school. - Submitted manuscripts will be included, but not
manuscripts in preparation.
6Guidelines - 2
- You do not have to have published a manuscript
or written an abstract to include a description
of a project you worked on. - Research honors are considered only if won by and
awarded to you directly, not to your mentor. - Research honors will be requested, along with all
other honors, and included as part of the
academic portion of the MSPE.
7Guidelines - 3
- Hard copies of each manuscript published, in
press, or submitted for publication and each
abstract presented, accepted for presentation, or
submitted must be submitted. - No citation will be included unless a hard copy
has been submitted.
8Guidelines - 4
- A hard copy is NOT a computer print out of the
manuscript or abstract, but a reprint obtained
from the publisher, a copy downloaded from
PubMed, or a copy made directly from the journal.
9Guidelines - 5
- For manuscripts submitted for publication and
under review, or in press, please submit a copy
of the letter of receipt of the manuscript from
the journal along with your other documentation.
You can request this from your mentor or the
journal. An email is fine.
10The Process
- The online template will be available by May 15.
It must be completed by June 15. - Please bring ALL hard copies, together at one
time, to Grace Oluoch, Medical Student Research
Office, Annen. 5-16 no later than June 15. - Students who submit manuscripts or abstracts will
meet first with Grace to confirm that all hard
copies are present and in the appropriate form.
11The Process - 2
- You do not need to meet with Grace if you include
a description of your project, but have no
manuscripts or abstracts. - At the meeting with Grace, or after your template
is submitted if you have no manuscripts or
abstracts, you can set up an appointment with me
to review the narratives. Together, we will be
sure that they express your accomplishments in
the most flattering way.
12The Process - 3
- After the due date, changes will be permitted
only for submission, acceptance or publication of
a manuscript for a project already included in
your MSPE. This information should be sent by
email to medicalstudentresearch_at_mssm.edu. - No new projects can be added after June 15.
13Final Comments
- Please start now to collect everything you need.
It takes time. - I am available to meet with you if you have
questions. - We need your help to do the best job we can for
you by asking you to meet the deadlines. - Together we can make your MSPE research section
shine!
