Keeping Time The new Deltek system is up and
running. Soon, all Allied employees will be using
electronic time collection. Not only will this
system keep better time, it will also save time.
Congratulations to those who worked so hard to
get this up and running. ?
Safety Corner Be Smart! Prevent Fires! Good
housekeeping ties in closely with fire
prevention. If you allow debris or flammable
material to accumulate, the risk of starting a
fire increases.  There is always the possibility
that fire may break out by accident.  Fire
prevention is part of everyones job.  Everyone
must help to keep the work area clutter-free and
safe from other fire hazards, such as improperly
used or stored chemicals.  You also need to
know what to do in the case of a fire emergency. 
Our employer has a fire prevention plan spelling
out everyones roll you should know the actions
you are expected to take in the event of a fire.

iSTAR UAV Flies for the Israelis.
A very successful flight demonstration was held
for IAI on Jan 28th. The demonstration was
attended by Mr. Yair Dubester, General Manager of
IAIs Malat Division. His division is
responsible for all UAV programs within IAI. Mr.
Dubester was very pleased with the demonstration
and has urged us to work with them to conduct a
Hunter Cowling, Stream Tube Test Hardware and BAE
RCS Test Fixture.
Attention to Detail. Good things sometimes come
in small packages. Nothing can truer than when
describing the artwork created by our very own
Zahid Qureshi. Zahid works in Allieds Newport
News Composite Shop, where heuses his skills to
create very complex prototypes, flight
hardware, and other one-of-a-kind
items. Pictured are examples his work away from
the office. Among other things, Zahid
specializes in rice paintingthat is, paintings
on a single grain of rice. Now, thats
detail! Zahid began painting rice several years
ago after running a holiday business in the mall,
where he wrote custom names on rice as gifts. I
needed more challenge, said Zahid just putting
a name on a grain of rice got pretty boringa
full portrait offered the challenge I needed. ?
demonstration in March for the Israeli Defense
Forces in Israel. IAI is looking to team with us
for sale of our VTOL UAV in Israel. We are
currently working the issues associated with
planning a demonstration in Israel. We have
submitted for the necessary export license and
are working with IAI on an agreement to lay out
the demon-stration program contents and how the
program will be funded. ?
Employee Corner
We Deliver! Over the past quarter, Allied
Aerospace has made a number of significant
deliveries to customers. In late December,
Allied delivered to BAE Systems an RCS test
fixture. We are known for producing this type of
specialized hardware and because of prior work
with BAE they came to us directly. The quality
was excellent and we delivered ahead of our
contractual commitment. Also in December, the
Space Station Inlet and Exhaust Mufflers were
delivered to Boeing Huntington Beach. These
assemblies are man-rated space flight hardware
and represent the high end of composite
manufacturing. The customer has expressed to us
that they are very pleased with the work and are
recommending Allied to other groups within their
organization and to their customers. Nose cones
that serve as radomes were delivered to the Navy
at Patuxent River. This is a repeat customer
that we continue to support them with on time
deliveries. Production of the Hunter UAV
Cowling continues in full swing. Allied has
already delivered 15 shipsets and is in the
process of the next installment of 13 shipsets.
Deliveries are on-time and the weight of the new
cowlings is nearly half that of the previous
ones. Hunter, which has flown over 3,000 sorties
in Afghanistan and Iraq, is currently undergoing
flight testing with a new heavy fuel engine and
our cowlings. ?

Allied President and CEO, Bill Jacobson,
presented OSHA Training Cards and Certificates
to Bill Harkness, David Plunkett, Norman
Coggeshall, Dan Duna and Norris Monk. Trainer
Rhonda Principino was also on hand for the
presentation. This certification identifies them
as OSHAauthorized trainers for Allied. Good job
folks!

GE Power Systems.
Bombardier Wind Tunnel Model Ships. During the
holidays Allieds Team at Newport News were busy
at work putting the final touches on the
Bombardier wind tunnel model. This model will
validate the design of Bombardiers latest
singleaisle passenger jet. After months of hard
work, the model shipped and was delivered three
days ahead of schedule to our Trisonic Wind
Tunnel Facility in El Segundo, California.
Introducing the New Allied Intranet.
Why are we doing this?We want to provide a
central location for commonly used forms and
information that is easy to access, maintain, and
most importantly, keep current. Whats going to
be on it?Already, our Intranet is a great
resource for information, in electronic form,
like Employee phone directories for the entire
company, The Company Employee Handbook, and
Common Forms and Events Calendars are just a few
of the things to which youll have access to. So,
Its Still Under Construction?Yes it isand
will always be. We will be adding, subtracting,
and making it more useful as time goes by.
Allieds Intranet will gradually be replacing the
traditional server directories with easy to use
web-based browser interfaces. Eventually, all of
the commonly used company forms and information
will be accessible through the Intranet. ?
Allied is pleased to announce a new resource for
finding useful company information quickly The
Allied Intranet. What is an Intranet
anyway?An Intranet is a network within an
organization that uses internet technology. An
Intranet behaves exactly like the Internet in
that you can retrieve pages from servers, the
difference is that it is not part of the
Internet, and cannot be accessed from outside the
organization. The beauty of the system is that
all data is stored centrally and securely,
allowing easier maintenance. How can I get on
the Intranet?If you already have access to the
Internet at Allied, you can open the Intranet by
typing in www/intranet in your browser address
window (no http//). For those of you who do not
currently have access, you willOur IT Folks are
currently setting up every employee at Allied
with a username, password and email address. In
addition to that, centralized access to computers
for all employees is scheduled to be completed
by March 1st.
Allied Aerospace recently supported GE power
systems with design and fabrication of highly
instrumented diaphragm assemblies for sub scale
steam turbine design validation testing. We
were recently awarded a task to instrument two
stages of the full scale turbine. This task
offers unique challenges in that the sensors are
installed in fully assembled, full scale
diaphragms.
Because the testing is at our own facility, we
were able to avoid some of the typical delays
common with delivering to an outside source,
said Phil Kessler, Program Manager. Testing
continues, with completion currently estimated
February 18th. ?
The L-1 Diaphragm is 12-foot in diameter and
weights over 24,000 lbs assembled. We are tasked
to install 96 metal thermocouples, 56 air temp
thermocouples, 48 static pressures, and 8 strain
gages. We are also tasked to perform a natural
frequency test of the L-1 Diaphragm. ?

So Whats Available?
Tour De LSWT. Lance Armstrong made a trip to the
Allied Aerospace Low Speed Wind Tunnel to get
some new aerodynamic information and give his
prototype Trek track bike its first test run.
Joining Lance were teammates Viatcheslav Ekimov,
Jaroslav Popovych, Jose Acevedo and George
Hincapie, plus a full entourage of
aerodynamicists. Rounding out the group were Nike
designers, trainers from Carmichael Training
Systems (including Chris Carmichael himself),
Steve Hed, Trek engineers and the Trek team
director Johan Bruyneel. According to team
liaison Scott Daubert who has been to nearly
every wind tunnel in America with Lance, the
Allied tunnel is among the nicest to work in.
Built in 1944, the concrete tunnel has remained
largely unchanged except in terms of data
collection which on this day was performed by a
collection of AMD computers. If there was one
thing Lance did learn from his day in the tunnel,
it was that making an attempt on the hour record
wont be easy. In other words, theres a lot more
to it than just riding around in circles for an
hour. Everything from tire selection, body
positioning, track elevation, and living within
the UCIs technical regulations have an impact on
the effort. ?
