Checklist to start a 4-H Shooting Sports
Wildlife Program

• Inform yourself about the program its structure,
  philosophy and objectives
  
• Involve your 4-H Program Staff in the decision to
  offer the program or parts of it in your county
  
• Identify potential volunteers
• Conduct an orientation meeting for the potential
  volunteers
  
• Organize the interested leaders into a
  county-wide 4-H Shooting Sports Committee
  
• Involve the committee in planning the year
• Get started have fun!

How to start a 4-H Shooting Sports Wildlife
Program

• Will you be a project club or a county-wide
  program?
  
• Which disciplines will you offer? (Who has been
  trained in what disciplines?)
  
• How often will you meet?
• Will you meet year round? Once a month?

Expectations

• At least one active adult leader has successfully
  completed a state-sponsored Shooting Sports
  Wildlife training workshop or advanced training
  in each discipline that members are participating
  in.
• It is strongly recommended that coaches
  (instructors) be re-certified every five years.
  
• At least one county leader must be in attendance
  at county training where live fire is occurring.
  
• Instructors MUST be certified in the disciplines
  they are instructing.
  
• Minimum of 8 hours of wildlife education
  annually.
  
• 15 hours of on-line marksmanship/safety for each
  participant (including basic safety, range rules
  and etiquette, and marksmanship in scoring) in
  each event in which the participant competes for
  the first year.
• In case of .22, air rifle, air pistol and BB gun
  disciplines only, 15 hours total training of one
  discipline and 5 hours in each other related
  discipline.
• After the initial year of training in a
  discipline, the participant shall have an
  additional five hours of training annually in
  each discipline he/she is to participate in.

  you have completed 20 skill options from the 54
  listed below, you will be eligible to receive an
  advancement certificate from your 4-H leader for
  Step 1. You can then move on to Step 2. Seven
  of the 20 skill options must be in categories A,
  B, and C. If you are 13 or older, select at
  least two from category I.

What is the MN 4-H State Shooting Sports
Wildlife Invitational?

• The opportunity for all youth enrolled in the
  Shooting Sports Wildlife Program to showcase
  the skills they have learned in the past year.
  
• Hosted for a two year timeframe by a county (or
  group of counties). These volunteers and county
  staff organize and plan the details of the
  event.
• All disciplines are offered and youth are
  scheduled throughout the event.
  
• In 2007, 725 youth were registered for the event.
  The event has increased since its beginning in
  1985.

Timelines regarding the 4-H Shooting Sports
Wildlife Invitational

• All entries are due to county office by July
  21st
  
• Entries submitted to regional office for final
  processing due to host Regional Office (in 2008
  Andover) by August 1
  
• All entries are then scheduled and a final
  schedule is typically available by August 25th
  counties can then share with their participants

• 1. Provide registration materials to members and
  determine return date which will allow county to
  process entries and return to Regional Center,
  which must complete and send on to the Regional
  Center doing final entries by August 1. (A
  recommended county deadline would be July 20th).
• 2. Review forms returnedlooking specifically
  for Parent/guardian signatures on Registration
  Form, Parental Consent of Discharge of air guns
  and .22 pistols, Code of Conduct and Member
  Information and Authorization Sheet (MIAS) Member
  signature on Registration Form, Code of Conduct,
  and Member Information and Authorization Sheet
  (MIAS) Coaches names and signatures on
  Registration Form
• 3. Complete County Entry Form and return to
  Regional Center

Project Development Committee?

• The 4-H Shooting Sports Wildlife PDC is
  comprised of all of the nationally trained
  instructors, as well as youth and volunteers who
  serve a three year term. Industry
  representatives also serve as partners to the
  program.
• Meetings are held two times a year on the second
  Friday of March October on the St. Paul campus.
