Foxtrot
  • The Foxtrot was introduced into the mainstream in
1913 by a man named Harry Fox. It ultimately
became the most popular and lasting dance of the
    twentieth century.

Foxtrot
  • Foxtrot is a smooth progressive dance
    characterized by long, continuous flowing
movements across the dance floor. The American
style version of the Foxtrot takes many forms
The Bronze level Foxtrot, truest to the original
Harry Fox version, is a simple combination of
walks and chasses ideal for social dancing.

32
Foxtrot
  • Foxtrot is extremely versatile and can be danced
to a variety of musical styles and tempi. In
competition, however, it is danced to 4/4 big
band (usually vocal) music at a tempo of 30 to 34
measure per minute in Bronze, 29 to 30 measures
per minute in Silver and above levels.

Outside Partner (Right)
33
Waltz
  • Waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized
by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and
rise fall. Graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers
glide around the floor almost effortlessly. At
28-30 measures per minute, the tempo is slow at
best, but the expressive quality of the music
often invites very powerful and dynamic movement
    from dancers.

34
Waltz
  • When first introduced into the English ballrooms
in the early 1800's, the Waltz was denounced by
both church and state for its vulgarity and
immorality... this was, after all, the first time
society had seen this outrageous dance position,
with the man holding the lady so close to his
body. But the very thing that brought it such
criticism also made it appealing, and the Waltz
    was here to stay.

35
Waltz
  • Waltz is by its very definition a form of music
in 3/4 meter. The first beat of each measure is
dominant with a strong downbeat accent, while
beats two and three are lighter.
Characteristically, Slow Waltz music is sweet,
melodic and fluid. It is often orchestral music,
mostly lacking in heavy percussion or drums,
relying more on the melodic instruments to carry
the rhythmic progression. The music can be vocal
    or instrumental.

36
Tango
  • In the late 19th century, Buenos Aires was filled
with immigrants from Europe and Africa, many of
whom found themselves lonely and looking for
companionship in their new foreign habitat.
  • Naturally, these forlorn people found their way
to the portenos, seeking drinks to drown their
    sorrows, temporary friendship, and any
entertainment to help distract their depressed
feelings. The variety of cultures combined to
bring about a new style of music, formed from
African beats, Indian rhythms, Latin influences,
and the popular music of the pampas (flatlands)
    in Argentina.

37
Tango
  • As you may guess, this new music was dubbed
Tango. Historians argue the name comes from the
African candombe drum beat known as "tan-go", or
possibly from Latin word tangere (to touch). The
dance began as a pantomime of communication
between prostitute and pimp. The improvisation
was filled with emotional outpouring and
suggestive gyration. This sexual choreography was
accented by the melancholy drone of the
bandoneon, a German instrument very similar to
    the accordion.

38
Tango
  • Throughout the tangos evolution, two things
remained constant the background music of the
bandoneon, and the passionate translation of
    emotions into dance.

Cha Cha
  • Cha Cha is a rhythmical Latin dance which
originated in the 1940's as a modified form of
Mambo. It's fun, energetic, sexy and flirtatious,
easily distinguished from other dances by its
addictive "Step, Step, Cha Cha Cha" rhythm.
  • Cha Cha is either danced to authentic Latin
music, or more contemporary Latin Pop or Rock.
The music is energetic and with a steady beat.
