GIS Seafloor Mapping Using Wireless Technology
Students are certified in the application of ESRI
GIS and Trimble GPS mapping technology using
equipment from our HP Grant.
CSUMB students are working on 3 research vessels
with Italian, New Zealand and U.S. scientists as
part of a National Science Foundation Grant.

GPS/GIS _at_ the Ross Sea, Antarctic
Students conduct acoustic, video biotic mapping
activities, producing high-resolution seafloor
habitat maps using IPAQs and laptops on one
vessel and immediately sharing their results with
scientists on other research vessels who are
sampling the marine species associated with each
habitat type.

Three VesselsShare Wireless Infrastructure

• Network uses 802.11b cards and AP2000 access
  points with omnidirectional antennas.
• Established wireless hubs from D-Link.
• Only through wireless technology that the
  students and scientists can share the habitat
  maps in real time.
