Introduction
  • There are many different species of manatees in
the Order Sirenia. They come in all shapes and
sizes, but have some things in comon. In our
slides, we have many different kinds of
    Sirenians. We have the following
  • Dugongs
  • Florida and Antillean manatees
  • Amazonian manatees
  • West African manatees
  • We hope that you learn a lot from our
    presentation.

Dugongs
  • Siren was a term used for sea nymphs. Throughout
history sailors often thought they were seeing
mermaids. They were probably seeing manatees or
dugongs. Manatees can have uncanny resemblance to
humans. Manatees and dugongs may have helped to
    create the myth of mermaids.

Florida and Antillean Manatees
  • Florida manatees are found in the southeastern
    United States.
  • Antillean manatees are found in the coastal and
inland water ways of Central America and along
the northern coast of South America.
  • Both types of manatees live in salt, fresh and
brackish waters. They feed on marine estuarine
    and fresh water vegetation.

5
Amazonian Manatees
  • Amazonian manatees live in the Amazon River which
is fresh water, and its tributaries to South
    America.
  • The smallest member of the Trichechidae manatee
    is the Amazonian manatee.
  • They have smooth skin and no nails on their
    flippers.
  • They feed on fresh water vegetation.

6
West African Manatees
  • The West African manatee is very similar in
appearance and size to the West Indian manatee.
  • They live in a similar habitat as the West Indian
    manatee.
  • West African manatees are found in the West
    African coastal regions.
  • Very little is known about this species because
they have not been widely studied.
