Human Testing

• Antibody tests
• Not a test for the virus

MIA

• Newest test available
• EEE, WNV, and SLE IGM
• CDC working on LAC and others
• Nothing will change from the providers end
• Same samples serum and CSF
• Same collection
• Presumptive positives will be sent for PRNT at
  CDC if needed.

ELISA

• LAC IgM
• WNV IgG
• Nothing has changed for the lab or providers

• This is only for patients that fit proper
  guidelines
• Symptoms more than 8 days
• Positive IgM
• Serum only

Horse Testing

• ELISA for EEE and WNV IgM only
• Dont test for IgG because the vaccines would
  show a positive result.
• Nothing has changed for lab or providers

Bird Testing

• Use RT-PCR
• Tests for virus
• Can test for EEE, SLE and WNV
• Oral swabs still the best way of collecting

Oral Swabs

• Specimen selection
• No decay
• No maggots
• Always use your PPE (in lab collection kit)
• Procedure
• Break the beak open
• Insert the swab as far back as possible and swab
  the cavity
• Place cotton tip into transport media

Oral Swab Procedure, continued

• Send to the lab on day of collection or
  refrigerate until you can.
• Mail specimens through USPS in provided mailing
  containers, at room temperature.
• Try not to mail on Fridays or day before a holiday

Mosquito Testing

• RT-PCR for virus
• Pools should contain no more than 100 mosquitoes
• Species determine what viruses are tested
