3Visión
4Vision
- Reed Elementary Vision
- We inspire each student to become a lifelong
learner and a contributing, responsible citizen. - Dual Language Strand Vision
- It is our responsibility to provide a research
based program to ensure that our school better
meets the needs of our Spanish speaking
population while providing opportunity for our
English speaking students to become bilingual,
biliterate, and bicultural while achieving
academic competency.
5What Is Dual Language?
- Also called Two-Way Bilingual Immersion or
Two-Way Immersion, dual language instruction
brings together Spanish and English speaking
students for academic instruction that is
presented separately through two languages.
- Capacidades multiculturales
8Goals
- High levels of bilingual proficiency
- Biliteracy students will read and write at grade
level in both English and Spanish - Content area achievement at or above grade level
- Multicultural competences
9Why Dual Language?
- We are committed to providing an enrichment
opportunity for our English language dominant
students which will provide many future benefits.
- According to our data from the last three years,
our English Language Learners (ELL) plateau at
the intermediate level, despite the huge growth
in the primary grades. - This plateau increases the learning gap between
English dominant students and ELL students as
they move through our public schools. In order to
close the gap, we must improve the way we teach
our Spanish speaking students.
mundial.
12Research Dual Language Benefits
- Students who add a second language to their first
language demonstrate higher levels of language
proficiency and self concept. - Knowledge learned through one language paves the
way for knowledge acquisition in the second.
Students will reach higher levels of achievement
in their native language, second language, and
content areas. - Global competitiveness and compassion for
multiple cultures.
13Instructional Plan
- Kindergarten students will learn for 80 of the
day in Spanish and 20 of the day in English. As
students progress through the grades, their
instructional time in Spanish will decrease by
10 per year, and instruction time in English
will increase by 10 per year until students
reach third grade where they will learn 50 of
the time in English and the other 50 of the time
in Spanish. - Kunas dual language strand will be housed at
Reed Elementary. It began in the fall of 2007
with Kindergarten. Each year, one grade level
will be added until the strand is running in
grades K-6 in 2013.
incluidos.
16Implementation Process
- Note An ESL inclusion program will be in place
for English language learners who are not
participating in the dual language strand. - Note Instruction time is based only on time
spent in the classroom. Special classes like
library, PE, music, and breaks like recess and
lunch are not included.
17Why 80/20 in Kindergarten?
- To provide clear language models for our dual
language students. - English is the dominant language. It is the
primary language used on the playground, in the
lunchroom, and in specials. They hear English on
the radio, TV, and in our community. - The dual language programs that we researched as
a committee have advised us to use more Spanish
in primary grades because the native English
speakers who go through 50/50 programs elsewhere
have not become as proficient in Spanish as
possible had they received more instruction time
in Spanish.
total. El otro 50 de los estudiantes serán
escogidos a través de un sorteo. Un administrador
de la oficina del districto presentará y
supervisará el proceso del sorteo.
20Student Selection Criteria
- All students within the Kuna School District
boundary may apply for the dual language program.
- Enrollment preference will be given in the
following order 1) to siblings of students who
are already program participants, 2) to members
of the founding Dual Language committee and
strand teachers, and 3) to district employees.
This preference will be given to students in that
order and may not constitute more than 50 of the
total. The other 50 of the students will be
chosen through a lottery. A District Office
Administrator will be present to oversee the
lottery process.
21- Lottery The Kuna School District Office will
write the names of students with applications on
a 1x4 strip of paper. To achieve a 50/50
language and gender balance, these names will be
divided into 4 categories, separated by gender
and first language (i.e. Girls-English,
Girls-Spanish, Boys-English, Boys-Spanish) and
will be put into separate hats. Committee members
will draw 6 from each group to have a total of 12
native-English speakers and 12 native-Spanish
speakers. Students not selected will be notified
that they are on waiting list in case any student
moves during the summer or is withdrawn from
program within 1st two months of school. - Parent Interviews Using the 24 names pulled from
the lottery, members from the Dual Language
Committee will conduct parent interviews. They
will address questions from application,
especially What are some questions you have?
At this time, parents who are unsure they are
able to make the 7-year commitment may withdraw
their application. Contracts will be signed at
this time. - A meeting will be held with parents the week
before school starts to review the program
commitment and what is to be expected.
22- Sorteo La Oficina del Districto de Kuna
escribirá los nombres de los estudiantes con
aplicaciones en un papel tamaño de 1x4. Para
conseguir un balance de 50/50 en lenguaje y
genero (femenino/masculino), estos nombres serán
divididos en cuatro categorías, por generó y
primer idioma (ej.
24Curriculum and Assessment
- State and district curriculum guidelines are
followed and grade level competencies are taught
in all subject areas at all levels. Literature
and academic excellence are a primary focus
throughout the curriculum in both languages. - Dual Language curriculum will be based on
thematic units guided by district standards,
incorporating cooperative learning methodologies
and hands on learning. - Students progress will be assessed using
standardized tests complying with state and
district requirements and authentic assessments
showing student growth across time.
25Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Will my child fall behind if he/she learns two
languages? - Concepts learned in either language become part
of the childs general knowledge. On some tests,
such as English vocabulary, students in bilingual
programs score higher than students in regular
English programs. Early in the program, students
may not perform proficiently on state
standardized tests like the IRI because the bulk
of instruction time in primary grades is in
Spanish. However, the dual language teachers will
provide many additional assessments in both
Spanish and English to show student progress. By
the time these dual language students reach the
fourth grade, they will outperform their peers
from English only classes on standardized tests
in all content areas according to research. - Is a background in Spanish required?
- No. Students beginning in Kindergarten are not
required to have any background in Spanish.
Context based instruction allows students to
master new concepts while learning Spanish.
Communication goes home in both languages.
Parents need only to help their child with school
work in their home language. Any homework sent in
the 2nd language, will be work that can be done
independently by the student.
26Preguntas Frecuentes
- Podrá mi hijo/a retrasarse si aprende dos
idiomas?
28FAQs
- How can we manage if no one in our family speaks
Spanish? - This is not a difficulty. The school realizes
that many parents are monolingual and will answer
your questions/concerns in English. We will
establish a support system to assist families in
both languages. - Will my child learn the same content as students
in a regular class? - Yes, the curriculum must follow the guidelines
for the State of Idaho standards. Students work
toward the same academic goals regardless of the
language of instruction. - How do students master standards if they do not
understand the language of instruction? - Instruction in the early years is content-based
and hands-on. Students learn in context, through
experiences, manipulatives, and group work. The
dual language classroom is not quiet. Students
learn from each other through conversation.
29FAQs
- Can I switch my child out of the dual language
strand? - It is important to remember that it is not
unusual for a child to feel frustration in
learning a second language. Do not panic and
switch a child because he/she is feeling
frustrated. Be supportive and encouraging. If you
are not convinced that the dual language strand
is the learning environment you want for your
child, it is better not to enroll. Your child
will easily pick up any negative feelings you may
have, and this will affect his/her learning at
school. - Can my child enroll after the strand has started?
- The student will need to begin the strand at the
beginning of Kindergarten. English speaking
students entering the strand without the
foundation necessary to acquire a new language
would have a difficult time catching up,
especially because 80 of the Kindergarden day
will be presented in Spanish. Spanish speaking
students who move to Reed later may be enrolled
in the program upon staff discretion.
30Preguntas Frecuentes
- Puedo sacar a mi hijo/a de programa de doble
idioma?
32FAQs
- If my child is enrolled in the dual language
strand, what can I do to help? - Most importantly, encourage your childs
interest in the language and in other cultures.
Show him/her that you value the ability to speak
a second language. Attend cultural events that
feature music, dance, or food from other
countries where the language is spoken. Spend
time with Spanish speaking families and have your
child practice speaking, reading, and writing
what they know. Attend dual language meetings
and events at school and in the community. - My child will spend 80 of their day in
kindergarten learning in Spanish? - Yes. Students are surrounded by English in the
community, at recess, lunch, and in special
classes. Students must spend the majority of
their primary grades in Spanish in order to
become a fluent speaker, listener, reader, and
writer in Spanish. They will continue to develop
their English skills in school, at home, and in
the community. Research shows that the more time
students spend learning in Spanish in the primary
grades, the more proficient they will be in both
languages later.
