Katherine, the protagonist, wants to make her
first sexual experience mean something. She does
not want to lose her virginity merely for the
sake of physical satisfaction or curiosity. She
wants her relationship with her boyfriend Michael
to be the real thing.

  challenged since its publication (1975) because
  it does not promote abstinence and monogamous
  relationships, for using four-letter words
  for talking about masturbation, birth control.

A Review
As a boy of 17, I read this book as part of my
English interim project. This novel might contain
some pretty graphic scenes, but it has some very
important educational values. It covers the
difficulties of sex (pregnancy, disease, etc.)
and does a great job of detailing both the
negative and positive impacts of sex in a
relationship (Anonymous).

away they hit it off and start going together.
Here is a sneak peak into their relationship.
I Wish Michael hadnt brought up the subject of
Tommy. Sex was all he was interested in, which
is why we broke up. He threatened if I wouldnt
sleep with him hed find somebody who would
(Katherine, pg 15).
Sex is a commitment, once youre there, you cant
go back to holding hands (Ks mom pg. 86).
He kissed my cheek, then my ear and whispered,
Are you a virgin? (K, pg. 22).
Im crazy about you., Michael said. Then we
kissed. But when he fumbled with the snap on my
jeans, I sat up and said, No, not now (pg. 28).

Well, I was so scared I couldnt concentrate on
it very well. And I dont think I was quite
ready, if you know what I mean. The problem
was, he didnt want to stop there. So I asked
him to stop. Most of all, I was worried I would
lose him if I didnt let him do what he wanted.
Why do you think you stopped him? I asked. She
smiled at me and said, You know, I think it was
for two reasons. One was that I dont think I was
ready yet, and the other was that I kind of
realized when I did finally feel ready, I
wouldnt want my first time to be with him. I
know its going to happen someday, and it scares
and excites me, not to mention worrying about
what the church and my mom might think, and who
it should be and how they would treat me
afterward. Its pretty complicated, you know, for
a girl, I mean.

The Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr
This is another good book!
Age thirteen, Deanna Lambert is caught by her dad
having sex in a car with seventeen year old
Tommy. As a result shes labeled the high school
slut. Her father is disappointed and wont even
look at her. To make things worse, now a
sophomore, her two best friends Lee and Jason
are a couple, and she finds herself jealous of
their closeness. In her frustration, she kisses
Jason when Lee is away. During the summer she is
forced to see Tommy again after getting a new job
where he happens to work. At the same time she
watches as her 18 year-old brother, who has a
baby with his teen girlfriend, deal with being
parents. Deanna learns to come to terms with
her past., and rebuilding a relationship with her
dad and her two best friends. While theres no
one real answer, or happy ending we watch her
grow as she deals with her life.
