• First to settle in North America.
• Came from places in United States to start new
  lives.
• Majority of ancestors came from European
  countries. 
• Saved money for the trip, sold land and other
  possessions, or agreed to work for others.

WHY DID THEY TRAVEL TO THE FRONTIERS

• Free land
• Stories
• Gold
• Hunt
• Trading
• Start new lives

WHAT WERE THEIR LIVES LIKE ON THE TRAILS

• Circled wagons for protection at night.
• Women fixed dinner
• Men prepared livestock for night 
• Gathered at night around campfires
• Told stories and visited

• Got up early
• Started the fire
• Prepared breakfast
• Gathered livestock
• Reloaded wagon
• Hitched oxen or mules
• Ate lunch and rested

What Was a Wagon Train?

• Group of covered wagons going west.
• Traveled in a straight single line.
• Looked like a slow-moving train. 
• Wagons formed big circle for protection.
• Captain led caravan down trail and made all
  decisions.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRAILS THEY USED

• Natchez Trace, used to travel to the frontiers of
  Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. 
• Oregon Trail, started in Independence, Missouri
  and went past Chimney Rock, Nebraska and ended up
  in northwest corner of Oregon.
