6Deployment Review
- Process
- Admin install
- Test computer install
- Create transform, policies, setup.ini
modifications, etc - Distribute
7Administrative Permissions On NT Workstation
- Windows Installer runs in Administrator mode
- Once Office has been installed by a user with
administrator privileges, install on first use,
etc, works appropriately for the regular user - For installation that avoids a trip to the
computer, use SMS in Administrator context - See IE5 slides
8Windows Shell Update
- Provides a new Windows shortcut type that can
store application-specific GUIDs - The Windows Installer uses these GUIDs to manage
its applications - Required for application-level install on first
use, self-repairing applications, roaming
applications - In IE4.01, IE5, Windows 98, Windows 2000
9Deploying the Windows Shell Update
- With Office 2000 (one-step process)
- Use the updated CIW
- Replace Setup.exe (chaining)
- Open the Windows Installer Shortcuts transform
with the CIW - Add command line to fix shortcuts.\Setup.exe
/fs data1.msi /chained - Add all other customizations
- Transform adds Windows Shell Update, runs
command after reboot to fix shortcuts - Note you can only chain once per transform.
10Deploying The Windows Shell Update
- IE5 first (two-step process)
- Add the Windows Shell Update via the IEAK
Customization Wizard - Reboot the computer before installing Office
11Deploying IE5 With Office 2000
- IE5 is NOT a Windows Installer application
Office Setup simply triggers its setup - On NT45, it runs in user mode, not admin
mode. You need to have admin rights before and
after the reboot for it to install properly. - Best solution is to use SMS in admin context.
- If you launch IEAK from CIW, you cannot remove OE
or NetMeeting - Results can be unpredictable in a really
locked-down environment i.e. no write rights to
\\WinNT directory.
12Internet Explorer 5
- Outlook Express
- NetMeeting
- QuickList Toolbar Channels Button
- Restrictions and Policies
13Outlook Express, NetMeeting
- Outlook 2000 requires Outlook Express
- Office 2000 requires NetMeeting for some online
functionality
14Outlook Express, NetMeeting
- Removing Outlook Express icons
- Supported method /X1 switch (do not make IE5
the default browser) - Unsupported method
- Open the MSOE50.INF file from the MailNews.cab
file. - Remark all lines containing OE in the
Create.links.RevertTo_4.0x, StubSetup, and
Create.links.nt sections. - For more details, see slide notes
15QuickLaunch Channels Button
- To Remove the View Channels icon
- From the Quick Launch Toolbar
- Open the IE4UINIT.INF found in IE4SHL95.CAB for
Win9x or IE4SHLNT.CAB for NT - Comment out the following lines
- Note this method is not supported by PSS
FILE_CHANNELS FILE_CHANNELS "View

19Multi-lingual Distribution
- Multi-lingual Possibilities
- Language Settings
- MLPK Pros and Cons
- Scenario 1 maximizing control
- Scenario 2 minimizing number of configurations
20Multi-lingual Possibilities
- Localized versions of Office 2000
- Same code as English
- Defaults, content set for local markets
- Office 2000 Proofing Tools
- Tools for all 37 languages on one CD
- Installs on all Office 2000 languages
- Office 2000 with MultiLanguage Pack
- English Office 2000 (Prem/Pro/Std)
- 8 language resource CDs
21Language Settings
- You dont need the MLPK simply to author in
another language - Admin tool
- Language Versions Tool (ORK) changes default
language and default settingsThis is critical
for compatibility, particularly for the Bi-Di and
Asian languages - End User Tool
- Language Settings Tool is designed for occasional
switching changes UI, font, and Help language,
but not all settings
22MultiLanguage Pack
- Combine it with U.S. English Office 2000
- To enable multiple users to use Office with a
different language for the UI and Help on the
same computer. - To mimic the localized version of Office.
23MLPK Pros
- Easier to create a single worldwide Office
configuration - Easier to test
- Reduced need for localized OS versions
- The only choice for multiple language use on the
same computer - Combine with the Win2000 LPK for even greater
flexibility
24MLPK Cons
- More steps to customize
- Desktop shortcuts and a small amount of content
are not localized - Reboot in the middle (Office 2000 completion
required) - Bottom line if you only work with a few
languages and dont need multiple languages on
the same computer, use localized versions
otherwise, use the MLPK.
25MLPKMaximizing control
- Creating a fully customized configuration per
region - U.S. English version should install all
international and language support features - Install Office and language(s) to a test
computer - Use the Language Versions Tool to set default
language - Restore other custom user settings
- Use the Office Profile Wizard for OPS
- Create a new U.S. transform that incorporates the
OPS file and chains to MLPK - Create a transform for the MLPK CD to change
installation states (optional)
26MLPKMinimizing of Configurations
- U.S. English version should install all
international and language support features - Create a batch file distribution routine
- Batch file 1 puts batch file 2 in startup
directory and runs Office Setup - Batch file 2 runs MLPK setup, Language Versions
Tool in Auto mode, and removes itself - Or, use SMS dynamic groups to assign jobs
appropriately, again, using the Language Versions
Tool in Auto mode to set the appropriate defaults - Result no customization, but very few
configurations, and minimal user interaction. Use
system policies to enforce user settings.
27MLPK Tips and Tricks
- To minimize user hard drive space
- Install U.S. English version on first use
- Install default language to local computer
- Set default language
- Net English resources wont be installed unless
the user tries to use the U.S. English interface - Windows 2000 Professional does not need reboot,
supports more languages in the U.S. English
version - Chain IME to MLPK via the transform
- Use the International tools on ORK CD
- Note the CDs dont always map to languages used
together.
