Fiction
  • Typical Fiction call numbers
  • FIC F JOH or JOH
  • Shelve in alphabetical order by the three letters
    on the bottom line. (Theyre the first three
    letters of the authors last name.)

Nonfiction
  • Typical call numbers for Nonfiction
  • 808.1 973 001.9 MIL LIN AST
  • The number on the first line is a Dewey Decimal
    number.
  • The letters on the second line are the first
    three letters of the authors last name.
  • Shelve in order first by the Dewey Decimal
    number, and then by the letters on the second
    line if you have two Dewey numbers that are the
    same.

Reference
  • Reference call numbers begin with REF.
  • The remainder of the call number is pretty much
    like a nonfiction call number. Sometimes the
    three letters on the last line stand for the
    title (if there is no author). Sometimes there
    will be a date on the fourth linefor instance to
    give a 2001 almanac a different call number than
    a 2002 almanac.

  • Collections of short stories. Typical call
    numbers

  • Youll shelve these books alphabetically by the
    three letters on the second line. The three
    letters will usually stand for the title of the
    book.

  • Professional books are books for teachers to
    use.
  • Typical call numbers
  • PRO PRO
  • 371.3 001.67
  • RAP LIN
  • These are shelved in the Professional Collection
    according to their Dewey Decimal numbers.

  • Manga are book-length Japanese comic books
  • Typical call numbers
  • MANGA MANGA

  • You will run across a few books with call numbers
    like this
  • GRA
  • MAU
  • Mix the GRA books in with the MANGA,
    alphabetizing all by the letters on the bottom
    line

Where are the sections?
  • Youll be able to locate them now that you know
    the typical call numbers for each section.
  • Youll also be making the signs to identify each
    section so that others can find them.
