Native North American Ballad Lyrics
2
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • Come gather all around me and Ill sing to you a
    tale
  • About the boys in Carmenville who almost went to
    jail
  • It happened on a Novembers night when all hands
    was asleep
  • We crept up over Joe Tulks Hill and stole Aunt
    Marthas sheep

3
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • Now if youll pay attention, I know Ill make you
    laugh
  • We never meant to steal the sheep, we meant to
    steal the calf
  • The old cow she got angry cause we woke her from
    her sleep
  • We couldnt take any chances so we had to steal
    the sheep

4
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • We caught the woolly animal and dragged her from
    her pen
  • She said good-bye to the little lambs shed never
    see again
  • She knew that those dark strangers soon would
    take her life
  • In less than half an hour she felt the dreadful
    knife

5
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • Aunt Martha she got angry when she heard about
    the loss
  • She said shed catch the robbers, no matter what
    the cost
  • Next morning just at sunrise, she to the office
    went
  • And to the RCMP a telegram she sent

6
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • The Mountie got the message and started in to
    read
  • This is from Aunt Martha, telling an awful deed
  • Last night my sheep was stolen, by whom I cannot
    tell
  • Id like for you to catch them and to drag them
    back to jail

7
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • Just a short time later, about twelve oclock
    that night
  • We had the sheep a-cooking, and everyone feeling
    tight
  • The smell of mutton and onions, no man could ask
    for more
  • We were chug-a-lugging Dominion when a Mountie
    walked in the door

8
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • Said sorry boys, your party I really dont want
    to wreck
  • I smelled the meat a-cooking, and I had to come
    in and check
  • You see the sheep was stolen and the theif is on
    the loose
  • I said come right in and join us sir, were
    having a piece of moose

9
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • He said thanks a lot and he sat right down and I
gave him a piece of the sheep
  • This is the finest piece of moose I know Ive
    ever eat
  • About two oclock in the morning he bid us all
    good day
  • If we get any clues on the sheep, sir, well
    phone you right away

10
Aunt Marthas Sheep
  • He said thanks a lot, youre a darn fine bunch
and I know your promise youll keep
  • If everyone was as good as you, she wouldnt have
    lost her sheep
  • After he left we had the piece we had in the oven
    to roast
  • We might have stole the sheep, boys, but the
    Mountie ate the most

11
The Moose Song
  • Come all you Newfoundlanders and listen to my
    song
  • Ill tell you about the moose we killed and the
    man that did us wrong
  • On a sunny morn, October 3rd, Im telling you no
    lies
  • When Lizzie Walker hollered out, saying, get
    your guns, me boys

12
The Moose Song
  • There is a moose down in the Reaches, coming up
    the lane
  • Jim Keepings got him rounded up, I think he must
    be lame
  • Our guns and ammunition, we got without delay
  • Lou Lemmen had the first shot, Im very sure to
    say

13
The Moose Song
  • George Croucher had the second shot, if you want
    to know his name
  • Bill Mondin had the third shot, which brought him
    to his end
  • There were men, women and children all gathered
    round the hill
  • All looking for a piece of meat, their appetite
    to fill

14
The Moose Song
  • But just before we got him clean, the boys from
    the crowd did say
  • I guess were going to be hung, the squealers
    on his way
  • He came up alongside of us, unto us he did say
  • Im sorry, boys, to inform on you, and turned
    and walked away

15
The Moose Song
  • We took the moose and chopped him up and gave it
    all around
  • It looked just like a meat market that day on
    Deweys ground
  • The men that killed the moose, me boys, they
    would not hurt a chick
  • To let that squealer inform on us, we should have
    broke his neck

16
The Moose Song
  • But lets think of the Bible, boys, and with it
    well advise
  • When they slap you on the left cheek, hold up the
    other side
  • The magistrate he came around, unto the laws he
    went
  • To try to soak us poor boys who never had a cent

17
The Moose Song
  • He said, You broke the law, me boys, indeed you
    understand
  • Two hundred dollars is a fine, but Ill do the
    best I can
  • If he had all to do within, he would not soak us
    men
  • To see the grief lie on these faces, his heart
    was touched within

18
The Moose Song
  • Our statement was all given in, everything went
    very well
  • He said, five dollars is a fine, or fourteen
    days in jail
  • And now my song is ending, Im going to propose
  • Its going to pay the squealer to keep his big
    mouth closed

19
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • It was eight oclock in the evening and Lucy was
    going to bed
  • Her dad was just ahead of her, he was up on the
    stair head
  • He looked through the window and a car he saw the
    white
  • He said, I believe Lucy, theyre stealing our
    sheep tonight

20
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • They lived out on the point where there wasnt a
    street light
  • Strangers seldom drive out there, especially late
    at night
  • Her daddy was ninety years and in no shape for a
    fight
  • They had to stay and watch them load the sheep
    and drive out of sight

21
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • They always kept a flock of sheep and they called
    each one by name
  • Lucy loved the poor things because they were so
    tame
  • Her daddy said wait til morn, theres not much
    more we can do
  • But call down the Mounties, and get them all the
    clues

22
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • Next morning the Mounties got the call and they
    rushed down to the scene
  • The white car they were looking for turned out to
    be light green
  • They closed in on the suspects, freezers filled
    to the top
  • This time, the Mounties said to them, these
pranks have got to be stopped

23
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • A few days later the Mounties brought in the four
    guys
  • This time, the judge said, you didnt pull the
    wool over their eyes
  • He passed out stiff sentences, a fine for them to
    pay
  • The four guys looked at each other, and someone
    in court said Baaah

24
Aunt Lucys Sheep
  • So if youre driving late at night and seeking a
    little fun
  • Just remember you hurt yourself if you try to
    hurt someone
  • And if youre feeling hungry and want to become a
    glutton
  • Stay away from sheep, boys, cause you cant get
    your mutton for nuttin
