Title: LASIK Plano- Questions to AskYour Surgeon About The Procedure

1
LASIK Plano What To Ask Your Surgeon About
The Procedure
  • Although LASIK is considered generally safe and
usually can be done with little or no
complications, there are certain inherent risks
    associated with it.
  • Given the fact that these are your eyes we are
talking about, and the consequences of such
complications could have a dramatic, negative
effect on your lifestyle, it is highly suggested
that you take the time to properly evaluate the
laser eye surgeon you are considering.

How many surgeries have you done?
  • It cant be stressed enough experience is
everything when it comes to laser eye surgery.
  • Although each Plano doctor has to become
certified by various medical boards to be
licensed to perform LASIK, the medical
professionals that have had the most experience
generally are able to produce the highest quality
and most consistent results for their patients.
  • Make sure any surgeon can tell you how many
surgeries theyve done and what type of surgery
theyve performed the most. They should have
performed at least 250 in the past 12 months.
When it comes to the type of laser eye surgery
youre getting done specifically, they should
have performed at least 100 surgeries within the
    last 12 months.

Will you do a contrast sensitivity testbefore
and after the procedure?
  • Most surgeons dont perform this test because
its not required and not a standard procedure.
However, a good surgeon will offer this test,
even if they dont have the equipment to do so
    right in their office.
  • Having this test done is just an extra layer
of security and will generally instill a greater
confidence in the patient and may also minimize
the risk of complications. It is not mandatory
that you have this test, however it is
recommended and many people do choose to take
    these few extra steps.
  • Again, its expensive and not many surgeons
have it readily available. They should be able to
set up an appointment for you though, at your
expense, at another location near Plano.

Will you measure the thickness of my cornea
before a decision about surgery is made?
  • This is a very important question because the
thickness of your cornea could ultimately
determine what kind of laser eye surgery you
    should get done.
  • Make sure that any surgeon youre considering
can answer yes to this question.
  • Knowing what type of laser eye surgery would
be best suited for you and your particular
situation can help you better evaluate the doctor
that you are considering and verify that they do
have sufficient experience in a particular type
of laser eye surgery that you may require.

How many of your patients have 20/40 vision
after the procedure?
  • This should be about 90.
  • If your eye doctor claims that their
percentage is higher, ask to see something that
    proves that.
  • These statistics are not set in stone
necessarily, however, historically on a national
average, these are the types of results that most
    people experience.
  • Of course, your results may vary depending on
the health and condition of your eyes and any
other health considerations that may come into
play should you decide to get LASIK in Plano.

How long has LASIK surgery been performed?
  • LASIK surgery has been in use internationally
for approximately 10 years. The clinical trials
were first performed in the United States in
    1995.
  • The underlying components of LASIK eye
surgery have been performed for much longer than
that, so the procedure has helped hundreds of
thousands of people all around the world,
    including Plano, TX.
  • It is a relatively safe and simple procedure
however there are certain inherent risks and the
patient should always consider all aspects of the
    surgery before considering this procedure.
