Things to remember
  • Processed foods that may not be as healthy as
    fresh foods
  • Processed foods should not be served frequently
or in big quantities because of the harmful
    effects of preservatives
  • Another healthy example of food processing is
frozen vegetables. While fresh may be best,
    freezing vegetables preserves vitamins and
minerals and makes them convenient to cook and
eat all year around. Fruit and vegetable juice is
also an example of a healthy processed food. In
fact, some orange juice is fortified with calcium
to make it even more nutritious.

Canned Goods

  • With in used through date

14
Malpractices of Food Manufactures and Vendors
  • 1. Expired Goods-content of canned or bottled
goods are spoiled if the date on the label has
    already expired
  • Short weighing-the measure or volume is short of
what it should be. This mean that although the
scale says 1 kilo, the weight is actually less.
  • Short Changing-your change is lacking so it is
always safe to count your change before leaving
    the vendor.
  • Adulterated Goods-some vendors used ingredients
that look very much like the real ingredients.
  • Mislabeling-the label does not tell the real
content of a can or bottle.
  • False Advertising-information about a product is
not true because undesirable qualities are not
    revealed.
  • Created Food Shortage-this practice intends to
control the supply of goods such as rice which is
    hoarded in warehouse.

15
Rights of a Consumer
  • The right to continuous supply of goods in the
    local markets.
  • The right to buy good quality goods.
  • The right to sanitary processing and sanitary
    handling of foods.
  • The right to refuse foods treated with chemicals
    harmful to your health.
  • The right to be protected from the malpractices
    of vendors and manufacturers.
  • The right to correct information about the value
of food products and other consumer items.
  • The right to demand consumer protection.

16
Responsibilities of a Consumer
  • Seek protection for the general welfare of
    consumers.
  • Check the quality of food supply at the local
    market.
  • Scout for honest and sincere entrepreneurs.
  • Check the health condition of the local market.
  • Report any malpractice of vendors or the
manufacturer to the proper agencies concerned.

17
Agencies Tasked to Safeguard the Rights of
Consumers

ensure consumers of quality product and safety.

    and safety of products.
  • Energy Regulatory Board-complaints against
shortselling of gasoline stations and LPG dealers.

Tips in Shopping
  • Prepare your market list before going to the
market. List down foods of the same category in
order to save time and energy.
  • Bring plastic bags instead of buying them.
  • Select a store that sells good quality goods at
fair prices. Wholesale buying saves more than
    retail.
  • Check the correct weight, measurement or quality
of the foods you are buying. Be careful about
    shortweighing.
  • Buy fruits and vegetables in season because these
    are more juicy and sweeter.
  • Always consult labels for net weight as well as
    expiration date
  • Count your change before leaving the store.
  • Check your market list to see if everything
listed in it has already been purchased before
    you leave the market.
