ESTUARY
  • partly enclosed coastal body of water w/ 1 or
more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with
a free connection to the open sea.
  • affected by tidal action.
  • transition zone or ecotone between fresh water
    and marine habitats.
  • belongs to class of fluctuating water level
    ecosystem
  • maybe define as a wide mouth of a river or arm
of the sea where tides ebb and flow as they meet
    the river current.

ST.LUCIA ESTUARY

Estuaries can be classified according to
salinity as
  • Oligohaline - Low salinity brackish (0.5-5 ppt).
  • Mesohaline - Moderately brackish water with a
    salinity range of 5-18 ppt.
  • Polyhaline - Highly brackish water with a
    salinity of range 18-30 ppt.

13
3 GIVEN CLASSIFICATIONS OF ESTUARIES ARE GIVEN AS
  • Geomorphology
  • Water circulation stratification
  • System Energetics

Classification under Water Circulation
Stratification
22
  • Estuarine water circulation is controlled by the
inflow of rivers, the tides, rainfall and evaporat
ion, the wind, and other oceanic events such as
an upwelling, an eddy, and storms. Water
circulation patterns are influenced by vertical
mixing and stratification, and can affect
    residence time and exposure time.
  • Highly Stratified or Salt Wedge Estuary
  • Partially Mixed or Moderately Stratified Estuary
  • Completely Mixed or Vertically Homogenous Estuary

23
?Classification under System Energetics
  • Physically stressed systems of wide latitudinal
    range
  • Natural arctic systems with ice stress
  • Natural temperate coastal ecosystems with
    seasonal programming
  • Natural tropical coastal ecosystems of high
    diversity
  • Emerging new systems associated with man

24
FLORA and FAUNA
  • Mixture of endemic species(restricted to
estuaries only) and those w/c come from the sea.
  • Sea trout, Menhaden, Oyster, crabs, spawn,
    Salmon, eel, meroplankton, haloplankton, mugils
