5
Our Purpose
  • Our intention here is to
  • Highlight several often forgotten trends
  • Discuss their relevance to and implications for
the success of future generations, despite their
    unpopular nature
  • Inform the practice of educators as they impact
the futures of todays students both in and
    outside of the classroom

6
The Innovation Economy
  • "The first step to winning the future is
    encouraging American innovation. Barack Obama

7
What Does Innovation Look Like?
While new science, inventions, and technology,
are highly valued innovations, Fareed Zakaria
(2011) duly stresses that the most important
innovation encompasses more than just scientific
or technological breakthroughs
8
Implications for The Future of Innovation
  • According to the Partnership for 21st Century
Skills (2007), all aspects of educating our
children should be in line with preparing
students to become productive citizens with the
21st century skills they need to be competitive.
  • If we expect students to function successfully in
our constantly evolving world, it is imperative
that they be equipped with lifelong learning and
    thinking skills.

9
How Do We Prepare Todays Students to be the
Innovators of Tomorrow?
  • Provide Learning Experiences That Help Students
    Develop 21st Century Skills
  • Social Interaction
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Evaluating Arguments
  • Critical Thinking Problem Solving
  • Communication Collaboration
  • Information, Media, Technology Literacy
  • Career Skills
  • Life Skills
  • Students need to be able to think outside the
box, solve problems, judge situations, and many
other things that are important to not only
learning in the classroom but functioning in an
    advanced society, workforce, and economy.

10
  The Next Workforce
  • Why the future workforce must embrace innovation
    to become globally competitive

11
How Will Tomorrows Workforce Look?
  • Over the next twenty years, more than seventy
million baby boomers will retire and todays
youth will become the future workforce.
  • With many of the manufacturing jobs shifting to
third world countries, the workforce will consist
primarily of women, minorities, and overseas
    workers.
  • The contemporary education system will need to
evaluate how well we are preparing todays youth
for the workforce of tomorrow (Estopher, 2011).

12
Are the Youth of Today Ready to Meet the
Challenges and Competition of a Global Economy?
  • The Facts
  • Public education currently provides students with
the basic skill sets to either go to college or
    enter the workforce.
  • The America that once was a service nation
providing manufacturing jobs to employ people
with no skill sets or job training is in the
past. The blue-collar work force is
systematically a part of the past.
  • Educators now have to find a way to ensure that
secondary education is preparing its students to
compete in a global high tech society (Estopher,
    2011).
  • In the 21st century the future workforce demands
crucial 21st Century Skills coupled with
    Academic, Life, and Career skills.
  •
  • According to Golden (2006) Our high school
students are poised to enter the global
marketplace or to continue their education beyond
K-12, and we must ready them for a "flat" world
in which competition for jobs and higher
    education is fierce.

13
How Can Teachers Help Prepare Students for the
Future Workforce?
  • Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies
in their curriculum in order to prepare the
    workforce of tomorrow.
  • Begin thinking like strategic planners and
    embrace the innovation and instructional
leadership needed to prepare students for a
changing global economy and workforce (Kasarda,
    2000).
  • Introduce students to a diverse array of social
    interactions and collaboration opportunities that
will prepare them for the workforce for the
future, which will consist of women, minorities,
    and overseas workers (Canton, 2006)
  • Instill in students the importance of continuing
their education in the sciences and technical
skills to be competitive globally (Canton, 2006).
  • Help students embrace a positive outlook on the
future and support them in becoming the leaders
of tomorrow while encouraging them to be a part
of the solution and not the problem (Canton,
    2006).
  • Teach and nurture the skills necessary to become
    successful entrepreneurs and financial managers.

14
The Future of the Climate ChangeGlobal Warming
15
What is Global Warming?
  • Global Warming is the rise in temperature of
the Earths atmosphere and ocean. This rise in
temperature will invoke devastating effects on
the natural environment and human life (Avery,
    2010).

16
Causes of Global Warming
  • Release of greenhouse gases such as CO2, Methane,
    Chlorofluorocarbons, and Nitrous Oxide
  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • Heavy use of power plants, cars, airplanes,
buildings, and other man-made structures that
    release CO2
  • Nylon and nitric acid production
  • Use of fertilizers in agriculture
  • Burning of organic matter
  • Deforestation
  • As discussed by Liben (2009)

17
Effects of Global Warming
  • Melting of Polar Ice Caps
  • Creates a rise in the sea level and disruption of
    natural currents
  • Alteration of Wildlife Habits and Adaptations
  • Reduces sea life habitats
  • Spread of Diseases
  • Insects carrying diseases will migrate North
  • Economic Disaster
  • Expenses for treating diseases, disaster relief
    for hurricanes, and floods
  • Depletion of Natural Resources
  • Hinderance of further development of countries
  • As discussed by Liben (2009)

18
The Future of Climate Change
  • How well are teachers preparing students for
changes in our environment? Many subjects are
taught in a school setting on a daily basis.
However, no emphasis is placed on natural and
man-made causes that affect our living condition
    now and in the future.
  • Our students need to understand how detrimental
environment changes are and actions that can be
taken to maintain the quality of life in the
    future.
  • We must make an effort to educate our future
leaders about global warming because of its
    adverse effects on all stakeholders.

19
Implications of Global Warming for Teachers
  • We want to develop well-rounded individuals who
    are
  • Informed of worldly issues
  • Able to communicate intelligently in order to
    formulate solutions to future problems
  • Able to contribute to a global society in a way
    that can help humanity
  • In order to be successful with this challenging
task we must educate students on real life topics
    that will affect their future.

20
How to Prepare Students for the Future of Climate
Change
Learning starts at home therefore, teachers need
to educate parents and the community on the
effects of global warming and ways to help reduce
causes of global warming
Ask parents to carpool in order to minimize the
release CO2 into the atmosphere because CO2
enables global warming (Berg, 2008)
Help students learn how to switch to
energy-efficient lighting and reducing energy
needed for heating or cooling to help reduce
emissions (Liben, 2009).
Teach students how to monitor use of lights,
games, and computers and turn them off when they
are not in use to help reduce global warming
(Berg, 2008)
Spend more time outdoors to reduce the need to
use electricity
Facilitate with students and families the
planting of trees and recycling as a community
effort to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide
released into the air thus reducing the long-wave
radiation and trapped heat
(Liben, 2009)
Engage students in global warming assignments and
projects for all students
Encourage the reduce, recycle, and reuse motto in
school as well as at home
21
Future of Global Warming
  • Please Remember
  • The future of the next generation in regards to
climate change is very uncertain but we should
    anticipate and prepare for
  • The further depletion of many natural resources
  • High risk of wildlife extinctions, floods,
    droughts, disease
  • A Rise in sea level
  • Economic disaster
  • Global warming is only one of many environmental
issues that students need to be aware of.
  • As educators we need to go above the basic
curriculum and teach our students about issues
that have the potential to destroy their future.

Inconspicuous Trends - Significant Implications
  • The Innovation Economy
  • Todays students need to be active participants
    in and/or supporters of innovation
  • Educators must help cultivate 21st Century Skills
necessary to be prepared for all established
    trends of the future
  • The Next Workforce
  • The workforce is becoming increasingly more
    diverse and globalized
  • Educators must facilitate the preparation of
students to compete in a global, highly technical
    society
  • The Future of Climate Change
  • The environment is changing and students must be
aware of the changes and motivated to maintain a
clean, safe, and life sustaining planet
  • Educators must prepare students for an increase
in global warming, pollution, and threats to the
    bio-diversity of life on Earth
