The Capture of Baghdad

• After the Kut-al-Amara triumph, Anglo-Indian
  forces under rule of Sir Frederick Stanley

  produced the Proclamation of Baghdad were the

Battle of Sharqat

• Decisive British victory, final battle for the
  Mesopotamian Front.
• October 23-30, 1918
• British campaign stopped, but due to victory in
  Palestine and Bulgaria Lloyd Georges government
  ordered to remove remaining Turkish influence.
• Sir William Marshall secured of the Mosul
  oilfields
• 18000 Turkish POW were taken
• Mosul oilfields ? peacefully taken by Indian
  cavalry two weeks after the Sharqat battle ,
  British took control on 1918

Result, Aftermath and Importance

• The Mesopotamian Front along with another Middle
  Eastern fronts greatly eradicated Ottoman rule
  and resulted in the collapse and defeat of the
  Ottoman Empire.
• The British Mandate in Mesopotamia
• Mosul was a point of debate and further conflict
  because of oil. Later, 1923 the Republic of
  Turkey demanded authority.
