  • Tofu Spring Rolls Tofu, rice vermicelli and
    fresh vegetables (lettuce, cilantro, and lemon
    grass) wrapped in rice paper. Served with peanut
    sauce.

  • Types of Articles
  • Economic articles, animal smuggling articles, and
    disaster reports are often found about Vietnam.
  • Not too much is even written about Vietnam
    anymore, but many articles can be found about the
    Vietnam war.
  • Impressions
  • These articles create the impression that Vietnam
    is not a very good place to live or be.
  • It also gives the impression that there isnt
    very many things good about Vietnam because there
    are only reports about bad things.

History
  • Early History
  • Vietnams past was difficult for historians to
    figure out because most of it was based off of
    myths and legends.
  • The story is that the first king of Vietnam was
    the eldest of 100 sons from a dragon lord and
    mountain fairy.
  • The Kings name was Hung Vuong, meaning Brave
    King.
  • He also named his kingdom Van Lang.
  • When the French came in, they thought it was a
    myth, but it was a powerful country and was most
    of northern and southern present day Vietnam.

  • There were 18 Hung Kings, but that line ended
    when in 258 B.C. Thuc Phan the King of Au Viet
    took over Lac Viet.
  • Thuc Phan renamed his new kingdom Au Lac. The
    kingdom lasted about 50 years. Trieu Da, a
    Chinese general, came in a took over Au Lac and
    founded Nam Viet.
  • He established the first dynasty in Vietnam, the
    Trieu dynasty.
  • The Vietnam people didnt want to embrace the
    Chinese culture.
  • So the Chinese were later thrown out and other
    dynastys were put in place. The last being the
    Nguyen dynasty.

  • French Colonies
  • French missionaries came into Vietnam saying they
    would help them and release them from slavery,
    but they did the opposite and enslaved everyone
    to make money.
  • Soon the Vietnamese people go tired of being
    ruled by France and over threw them at Dien Bien
    Phu.
  • Ho Chi Minh came in and Vietnam split in two. Ho
    Chi Minh made the northern part communist, but
    the southern part was made democratic.
  • Vietnam War
  • The war is known as the American war in Vietnam.

  • It started because the North wanted to unite
    Vietnam.
  • 1965 to 1973 America intervened to help the South
    because the United States was afraid of the
    domino theory and were very anti-Communist.
  • In the war, over 3 million people were killed on
    both sides.
  • Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon both
    controlled the US involvement in the war.

Language
  • Vietnamese has been main language since it gained
    independence from France in 1954.
  • At first characters and grammar were
    Chinese-like, but during 17th century, a Latin
    based language was introduced. This language
    began to be of use in the 20th century.
  • It is a tonal language and pronunciation is very
    important. Most northerners and southerners
    can't understand each other because there are
    different pronunciations and different terms as
    well as different dialects.
  • There are three dialects Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi
    Minh City.
  • Each correspond with a different area of Vietnam.
  • The second most popular language is English.
