•  So you have a horse arena and want some
  nighttime lighting?  Well, its not as easy as
  you think to have good horse arena lighting. 
  Some horse arenas simply need a few floodlights
  to illuminate the area and others require careful
  consideration to achieve good quality results.

• Simple horse arenas may simply have an old barn
  light mounted on a pole to provide security
  lighting.  For years, this was a perfectly
  acceptable form of area lighting, particularly in
  rural areas where glare is not a factor.  These
  lighting fixtures were inexpensive to buy, easy
  to install and efficient to operate.  However,
  these general area lights do not have internal
  reflectors and much of the light is wasted into
  thin air.  Residential Landscape Lighting
  Design have bolt on directional horse area kits
  designed to mount to any wooden pole.  These
  directional floodlights with internal reflectors
  force the light in a specific direction therefore
  preventing waste, improving efficiency and
  eliminating glare.

• More complex equestrian facilities may want a
  more professional approach to arena lighting with
  higher light levels.  This might be for
  recreational riding at night or perhaps for
  competitions such as barrel racing or rodeo
  events.  For this type of riding facilities,
  uniformity of light and shadows play an important
  role to the safety and wellbeing of the riders. 
  For these types of applications larger wooden
  poles or commercial grade steel poles in heights
  ranging from 20 to 40 may be required to
  illuminate larger areas.
