What Does a Hyperpigmentation Treatment Do?

Description:

Hyperpigmentation is what occurs when certain spots or areas on the skin are darker than normal skin tone. It happens in a variety conditions including age spots and liver spots (caused by sun damage – “Solar lentigenes”), Melasma of Choalasma (due to hormonal changes), freckles (inherited from parents), acne scars (a result of acne lesions healing), and drug treatment (with amiodarone, tetracycline, cyclophosphamide, chloroquine and others). There are many different types of treatments for hyperpigmentation. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

What is Hyperpigmentation
  • Hyperpigmentation is what occurs when certain
spots or areas on the skin are darker than normal
skin tone. It happens in a variety conditions
including age spots and liver spots (caused by
sun damage Solar lentigenes), Melasma of
Choalasma (due to hormonal changes), freckles
(inherited from parents), acne scars (a result of
acne lesions healing), and drug treatment (with
    amiodarone, tetracycline, cyclophosphamide,
chloroquine and others). There are many different
    types of treatments for hyperpigmentation.

Over the Counter Treatments
  • Some over the counter and even natural remedies
can treat hyperpigmentation. Olay Definity, which
has N-acetyl glucosamine, and niacinamide, is one
such product. The ingredients in Olay Definity
    work more effectively at reducing
hyperpigmentation in combination, than when they
are separate. Vitamin A and Vitamin C, found in a
number of skin care products, decrease the signs
of aging and hyperpigmentation. They may help
with some of the problems associated with post
    inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Although not as
effective as other treatments, their relatively
low price, make it worth giving them a try.

Hydroquinone
  • Hydroquinone can also be used to treat
hyperpigmentation. It is available as a cream
both over the counter and in prescription
    strength. Hydroquinone treats hyperpigmentation
by blocking the enzyme involved in melanin
(pigment that darkens skin) production, thereby
allowing the skin to lighten. When applying this
product it is important to apply it only to the
areas of the skin with hyperpigmentation, to
avoid lightening the natural skin tone as well.
It is often used to treat hyperpigmentation due
    to hormonal changes.

Microdermabrasion
  • Unevenly pigmented skin cells are often stuck on
the surface of the skin. Microdermabrasion is a
skin resurfacing procedure that removes the
hyperpigmented skin cells on top and reveals the
    normally pigmented skin underneath.
    Microdermabrasion is a relatively gentle
procedure that peels off a very thin layer of
skin by blasting it with a flow of aluminum oxide
crystals. It is an effective treatment. Deeper
hyperpigmented cells may also be lighter in
appearance, if not completely removed by the
process. Microdermabrasion also helps with skin
cell turnover, which helps to make skin look
    younger.

Laser Resurfacing
  • This technique involves the use of laser beams
to evaporate the first few layers of damaged skin
and show the fresh skin underneath. Hydroquinone
and mild chemical peels are often recommended
    before a laser resurfacing treatment.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
  • IPL is a type of laser treatment. It leaves no
scars, treats freckles or sun spots, and does not
need any pre-treatments with hydroquinone and
    other chemicals.

Hydroxy Acid Peels
  • Hydroxy acid peels are known to improve skin
cell renewal rate and decrease hyperpigmentation
through exfoliation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
are water-soluble and work by reacting with the
upper layer of the epidermis and weakening the
binding properties of the lipids that hold dead
skin cells together. This causes the outer darker
pigmented skin to dissolve, revealing the younger
lighter skin underneath. They are particularly
effective, getting rid of hyperpigmentation, as
well as reducing wrinkles and roughness. AHAs and
their natural sources include, glycollic acid
(sugar cane), citric acid (citrus fruits), lactic
acid (milk), malic acid (apples and pears), and
tartaric acid (grapes). glycollic and lactic
acids penetrate more easily into the skin than
other AHAs and are often seen in skin care
products. (AHAs) have the side effect of being
irritating to the skin. Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)
are lipid soluble and exfoliate the skin by
penetrating deep into pores and sloughing off
dead skin. The only widely used BHA is salicylic
acid. BHAs are less irritating to the skin than
    AHAs.

Prescription Treatments
  • Other formulas used to treat hyperpigmentation
include, Kinerase, Retin A, Renova, and Avita.
These are usually prescribed by physicians. Retin
A, Renova and Avita are the brand names for the
chemical tretinoin they work by helping to
increase exfoliation, clear up acne, and fade
    post inflammatory hyperpigemntation (PIH) caused
by acne. Kinerase reduces blotches and other skin
    conditions.
