Title: Prologue
1Prologue
Fran became interested in quilting when Rons
aunt, Lucille Hoffman, made a red-on-white twin b
ed quilt for Diane when she was about 10 years ol
d.
These quilts were made by Fran. Panels were
constructed and sewn by machine. All appliqué an
d quilting was hand stitched.
Design, layout, and templates provided by Ron as
needed.
Sit back and enjoy the show. Perhaps others will
be inspired to
quilt for their loved ones.
2Christmas Table CoverCompleted December,
1990Pattern Double Irish Chain
This is the first quilt I finished.
Casis quilt was started about
1984 but was put aside while
I went back to work.
Completed this one, after quitting work, to devel
op my
quilting technique.
3Pattern and Backside
Finishing this quilt gave me the confidence to fi
nish Casis
quilt and do it justice.
We tried to show the quilt stitching on the backs
ide
but it did not show up well in this photo.
All quilt pieces are machine sewn and all quiltin
g is hand
stitched.
4Block Details
The center blocks of the Irish Chain are made
from fabric printed with holly berries and holly
leaves.
5Displayed on Table
View of Christmas table cover displayed
on dining room table.
We use this table cover from Thanksgiving
through the Christmas holidays. It adds
that little extra touch to the festive
occasion.
6 Casis Quilt Completed October, 1991
I had the most fun and excitement working on this
quilt.
The six center blocks are individually shown on
subsequent photos. All blocks are 15 and use a
variety of pattern that may be familiar to quil
ters.
7Details Blocks 1,2,3
The farmhouse is for the home we hope Casi will
create someday.
The sailboat depicts the kid in Casi that we hope
will always be part of her.
Sunbonnet Sue is the little girl in Casi that we
hope will always be with her.
This panel is made up of rectangles, and trapezoi
ds,
and you thought I didnt know geometry/
I let my kid out a little by adding the seagull
s
flying over the sailboat.
This was my first attempt at appliqué
8Details Blocks 4,5,6
The Teddy Bear is for the tenderness and comfort
Casi brings
to others.
I added my own touch to show that Casi was born
in Texas on March 4, 1979 and is part of my hear
t.
The Dresden Plate uses pieces of each of the mat
erials used in the quilt and represents the vari
eties of life we hope Casi will experience as s
he grows and matures.
It was a real challenge to make this bear look l
ike a bear.
9TulipsCompleted June, 1992
I made this lap quilt in a quilting class
to further develop my skills in quilting.
I think I am hooked, at this point, on
following quilting as a hobby.
This is good for cuddling under in front
of a log fire in the fireplace.
10Pattern Displayed on Floor
The class was good and improved
my technique of strip cutting the
shapes for sewing together.
The reason for taking the class
was to become more proficient in working with tri
angles.
11Corner Display
Quilting details can be seen in
the tulip area and in the frame
and borders.
12Backside
The backside shows the quilting details.
I scan the backside to be sure I didnt
make any mistakes. It is easier to
follow the quilting pattern on the back
because the backing is a solid color.
13Donnies Baseball QuiltCompleted April, 1993
Ron custom designed this quilt in
recognition of Donnies interest in
baseball.
The layout is essentially to the
proportions of a major league
ballpark with yellow representing
portions of the stadium seating.
14Bed Display
Quilt was designed for a twin bed but displayed
here on a king size bed.
We hope this quilt helps Donnies dream, to becom
e
a major league ballplayer, come true.
15Ball Field
The ball field was quilted in small squares to
give the illusion of the grass patterns that are
commonly used.
The bases, home plate, and pitchers mound were
appliquéd. The foul ball lines were embroidered u
sing a stem stitch.
16Tri-Panels
The three panels contain quilting images of
baseballs, on the outer panels, and crossed baseb
all bats on the center panel.
17Fran Working on Quilt
I do all my quilting in the family
room so Ron and I can be together
talking, or watching television.
I quilt on a hoop stand that can be
adjusted for height and tilt.
18Courtneys QuiltCompleted January 1994Pattern
Ocean Waves
This quilt gave me a chance To use my skills in c
utting and piecing triangles together to make th
e pattern.
The quilt was made to fit a twin bed with the bor
ders
hanging down the side of the bed.
19Quilting by the Fire
I put the final touches to Courtneys quilt durin
g
the Christmas holidays.
I am doing the edge binding as the final task.
20Diamond Panels
Each panel has a quilted image of sea shells or m
arine
life.
Sea life is an important interest of all the kid
s and grandkids and is used as a part of the th
eme in several
quilts.
21Backside Quilting
This shows the quilting patterns used on the
borders and frame.
22Courtney Receiving Quilt
Courtney was very excited when her quilt arrived.
The different shades of purple are more apparent
in
this photo.
23Kellys QuiltCompleted January, 1995
I found this design in a quilting book as a wall
hanging. The design had to be enlarged for a
twin
bed covering.
This was another fun quilt to make, although it w
as
quite a challenge.
24Fran With Quilt
The storm clouds were constructed
from a fabric pattern that worked
well.
The border picked up the theme
of the sail boat in a storm with a
dolphin leaping out of the water.
Youll have to take my word for that.
25Fish n Ships
The underwater ripple pattern
of the quilting can be seen on this
photo.
The clouds have a random swirling pattern.
If you have a sharp eye, you can
see one of the fish swimming the
wrong way.
26Diane and Rons QuiltCompleted July,
1996Pattern A Thousand Pyramids
Its a good thing I spent time in class working
with triangles. Check out the name of the
pattern
in the title.
This was my first king size quilt
27Fran Quilting
I had an automobile accident during
the period I was working on this
project. I had all the pieces cut
before it happened. I was in a wheel
chair so Ron moved my sewing machine into the li
ving room so I could sew the pieces together.
28Triangle Details
We placed the cut triangles into a
pattern on the floor to give a good
distribution of colors. With a tong, I was able
to pick up each one and sew it to the top layer
of the quilt.
This quilt took about 1-1/2 years to complete.
29Border Details
Shown are the two quilted borders. This quilt
was good therapy for me while recovering from my
accident.
David was a tremendous help before I was well
enough to
continue with the quilt.
30Donnan and Monikas QuiltCompleted December
1997Pattern Wild Goose Chase
I loved making this king size quilt for Donnan
and Monika great bold colors. It depicts the a
ctive outdoor life they
love.
31My Workshop
This is where all the activity takes
place. The floor lamp, with a built
in magnifying viewer, is a gift from
Jim and Ione Adams. She has one
for her quilting and wanted me to have one.
Thanks, Ione, I use it all the time.
32Me in my Workshop
Here I am using the quilting hoop.
Notice the beautiful roses that Ron grew.
Ill bet none of you have as nice a working
environment as I have.
33Pattern Details
Close-up shows the rich colors used. Believe me,
I really had to concentrate to keep the pattern c
orrect.
I hope the colors dont keep them awake at night
.
Naah, Donnan can sleep anywhere. Not to worr
y.
34Backside Quilting Pattern
Intertwined hearts is the quilting pattern of the
red border.
The bold color of the top design shows through to
the back.
35Our QuiltCompleted February, 1999Pattern
Double Irish Chain
We finally got our turn for a bed quilt. This is
the same pattern as my first quilt Christmas
Table Cover.
It is amazing how a change of fabric can make
such a difference
in appearance.
36Another View of Our Quilt
Never having had a quilted bed cover before, we
were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable i
t is sleeping under a quilt. It is light and
warm.
37At My Workstation
Doing what I love doing!
Quilting makes me jump with joy.
38Pattern Details
Each of these white blocks have a quilting design
of sea shells, marine life, or traditional quilt
ing designs.
39Quilting Details
Before quilting the blocks, the image to be quilt
ed is
drawn with water soluble ink.
Shown here, before quilting, is a drawing for a s
tar fish and a sea shell drill. It is framed by
a traditional
quilting pattern.
40Stephanis Angel QuiltCompleted June,
1999Pattern Thursdays Angel
I made this crib quilt for Stephani who
is Diane and Rons first Godchild.
They were very excited to be Godparents.
41Displayed on Table Top
This quilt used a different technique
than any previous quilt I made. Ron
and I had to study the technique
before starting.
It was complicated at first but, as it
went together, it was fun.
I like the red heart in the Angels hand.
42Quilting Details
The fabric color was an important element in mak
ing
this quilt.
A third dimension was added by drawing and quilti
ng flow lines in the Angels hair, wings, and g
own.
We hope Stephani thinks about Diane and Ron when
she snuggles
under this quilt.
43Christinas Heart QuiltCompleted December,
1999Pattern - Hearts
Christina is Stephanis older sister.
Quilt is for a crib or youth bed.
44Displayed on Table Top
The hearts are appliquéd and is my
most ambitious use of this technique
to date.
45Fran Quilting
This quilt was started right after
Stephanis quilt and took six
months to complete.
This was taken as I was stitching
the final binding.
Hope Christina has pleasant dreams under her qui
