Title: Networking and Telecommunications

1
Networking and Telecommunications
  • 17. RUNet-Rutgers Network

2
Wan
  • 3 cities, t1 and t3 lines, oc3
  • Multiple (3) connections to internet (2 to the
commodity internet via Sprint -155 mbps,
    Verizon -35mbps, and 1 to I2 via Abilene - 155
    Mbps (Internet II) -redundancy
  • Buildings on each campus wired via campus
backbone (fiber) cable, routers and switches.
    Normally one router per building.

3
Newark Campus
Camden Campus
New Brunswick Campus
Internet
4
Lan
  • Offices and labs, primarily ethernet, twisted
    pair, star topology
  • Some older technologies exists or did in the
past, including arcnet, token ring, thick and
thin coax ethernet, bus topologies, etc..
  • Buildings contain backbone cable (fiber or coax)
to connect every floor's wiring closet. A hub
and/or switch in each wiring closet, to network
each lab/office in a star configuration.
  • Moving away from hubs, towards switches only
    (10/100 switches)
  • Campus backbone is based on fiber, switches and 1
    gigabit ethernet

5
tcp/ip, appletalk, ipx/spx
  • Main protocol is tcp/ip
  • Moving towards tcp/ip only
  • Novell, unix, nt, macs - client/server approach
(no mainframes on Camden campus). ibm mainframe
    in central campus in N.B.

6
  • Modem pools and access/terminal servers. 72
modems running v.90 (56k) in Camden. Moving
towards reducing modem pool (many users have
    moved to DSL/Cable modems)

7
RUNet 2000
  • 5 year project, 100 million. 600 building and
  • backbone wiring/re-wiring. 3 cities, many
campuses. Upgrade fiber wiring, routers, and
switches as part of backbone. Upgrades between
    building and backbones within buildings.
  • Ethernet based (10/100/1000), tcp/ip only.
    Enhanced cat 5e TP wire.
  • Carry data, voice, and cable/video. Joint
    project with Bell Atlantic (Verizon).
  • Includes OC3 link (155Mbps) from Camden to
    N.B./Internet.

8
  • 2 class B ip addresses
  • 128.6.xxx.xxx
  • 165.230.xxx.xxx
  • Use subnets (typically 3rd field in address)
  • Heavy Use of Switches and Vlans
  • Increasing the use of firewalls and private ip
    address space
  • VPN connections available

9
Internet II
  • Non commercial traffic, research only.
  • Universities and major research labs.
  • Rutgers has OC3 pipe to I2 directly (155Mbps).

  • THE END!!
