IsotopesEleven isotopes of sulfur exist. Four
occur in natural sulfur, none of which is
radioactive.

Whats It For?
  • Sulfur is used in matches, gunpowder, fireworks,
    batteries, vulcanization of black rubber
medicine, permanent wave lotion, and pesticides.
It also used in the making of sulfuric acid
(H2SO4), the most important manufactured chemical
used in making sulfite paper and other papers, as
a fumigant, and in the bleaching of dried fruits.

The Bare Necessities
  • Sulfur is essential to life as a component of
fats, body fluids, and bones. It is non-toxic as
the element and in the form of sulfate. But
carbon disulfide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur
dioxide are all toxic, especially hydrogen
sulfide which can cause DEATH? by respiratory
paralysis. It also quickly deadens the sense of
smell. So, if you have been exposed to hydrogen
sulfide without the proper cautionary methods,
then , and thank your lucky stars
that you are not already a victim of
deaths trap. (And you might consider
    visiting a doctor.)

For your 411
  • Pure sulfur is actually odorless.
  • Sulfur is insoluble in water, but it is soluble
    in carbon disulfide.
  • Sulfur can be found in pure form and in ores like
    cinnabar, galena, sphalerite, and stibnite.
  • Sulfur has three energy levels.

8
What do you know!?!
  • A dark area near the crater Aristarchus on the
moon has been studied by R. W. Wood with
ultraviolet light. This study suggests strongly
that it is a sulfur deposit. This discovery is
not agreed upon by all scientists.

From Deep Down in the Ground
Chey map of u.s.
  • Sulfur is commercially recovered from the wells
sunk into the salt domes along the Gulf Coast of
the U.S. It is obtained from these wells by the
Frasch process, which forces heated water into
the wells to melt the sulfur, which is then
    brought to the surface.

10
Sulfuric Light??!??
  • In 1990 the sulfur lamp was invented. It was
first demonstrated in 1994. The sulfur lamp is
Full spectrum (like the sun ), stable in
    color and brightness, long-lived,
environmentally safe, quick to start, operable in
any position, very consistent in performance, and
    compact.

  • Well, its time for me to close and
lock up the door on this project. Im
going to run on out of here now.
