7Career Management is Ongoing
- security lies not in employment but in
employability. Individuals who want to maintain
their employability must be willing to learn new
skills regularly - (Watts, A.G. Career Guidance Policy An
International Review (2005) p68).
8Career Management Tips
- Its your life make the most of it!!
- Ask questions, seek help from others
- Be optimistic about the future you can make it
great!! - Careers and opportunities will change be ready
to take advantage in the future - Consider starting your own business but seek
advice and get experience first
9Communication Tips for Young People
- The big talk with your parents
- Such an important chat needs to be meticulously
planned. It has three phases - Step onePick the moment carefully, make your
parents a nice cup of tea, then start by giving
them the opportunity to share their expectations,
their hopes and dreams for the forthcoming year.
Listen, nod at the right times, then feed back to
them what you've heard to reassure them that you
were listening. -
10Communication Tips for Young People
- Step two
- Tell them gently what your own goals, dreams and
expectations are. If you are like most students,
you may not have a clue. That's fine - tell them
your aim is to finish this year with the goal of
setting some short term goals before you finish.
Check that they understand and are reasonably
okay with that.
11Communication Tips for Young People
- Step three
- This is where you tell them what you want from
them. Explain that you would be very grateful for
their encouragement and support during the year.
Realise that not all parents have emotional radar
when it comes to final year students and that
some had their antennae severely damaged years
ago. Explain what help you want and what you find
unhelpful. - Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, Surviving Year 12
