2Introduction
Soon after my 24th birthday, I embarked upon an
adventure which led me through a door to the
unknown, the unforeseeable and the
unforgettable. The presentation that follows
is a concise attempt to share with the viewer
some of the images and experiences which taught
my spirit how to soar.
3In the Shadow of the Sun
My Travels in India
4Destination Highlights
- Udaipur
- Jaisalmer
- Ranakpur
- Pushkar Fair
- Taj Mahal
- Agra Fort
- Varanasi
5Udaipur
- Like a romantic vision in white, this City of
Dawn is surrounded by hills and mountains, and
set on the edge of three lakes.
6Udaipur
- Bewitching in all its details - narrow streets
lined by vivid coloured stalls, gardens, temples
and palaces-
every delightful feature mirrored in the placid
blue waters of Lake Pichhola.
7Ranakpur
- Located deep in the forested Aravalli hills, lies
the impressive 15th century Adinath Jain Temple
at Ranakpur.
The profuse and intricate carving on marble
resembles lace- work rather than stone-carving.
8Jaisalmer
- A fortressed city in the Thar Desert, its
scenery evokes images of feuding Princes and
great camel caravans.
9Jaisalmer
- The inner ramparts serve as display space for the
brilliantly coloured textiles of the Rajasthani
region- the vibrancy of the colours serving to
visually invigorate this dry and arid landscape.
10Pushkar Fair
- The electric nature of this holy secular
November festival is accentuated by the colourful
adornment bestowed upon animals brought to this
event.
11Pushkar
- For as far as the eye can
- see, the deserts surrounding
- the holy city of Pushkar are
- inundated by a seemingly
- endless stream of traders, pilgrims, merchants,
camels, horses, cows and bulls. Within this
dynamic milieu, social networking is accompanied
by a myriad of cultural events and exciting
camel-cart races.
12Taj Mahal
- The incredible beauty of this memorial structure
borders upon the divine as it continues to pay
tribute to a love that is well over 350 years
old. Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal, Emperor and
Empress, man and
wife- a story of devotion, passion, loss, grief
and genius- forever immortalized on the banks of
the Yamuna River.
13Agra Fort
- Imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, the Emperor Shah
Jahan spent the last years of his life confined
within the walls of this impressive sandstone
fortress. From within his prison, the Emperor
would have been able to gaze out onto his wifes
final resting place- as from this Fort, the Taj
Mahal can be seen across the river.
14Varanasi
- Varanasi, known to the devout as Kashi, is said
to have been founded by Shiva, Lord of the
Universe.
One of the oldest living cities in the world, it
has been a centre of learning and civilisation
for over 2000 years.
15Varanasi
- The spiritual energy
- of this dynamic city is
- an all pervasive force.
- Whether drifting along
- the Ganges watching human activity unfold along
the ghats, or wandering through its streets and
temples, one cant help but feel the
citys electric presence.
