Title: UTHSC Wireless LAN

1
UTHSC Wireless LAN
  • Todays wireless technology is designed to be an
extension of the LAN (Local Area Network),
providing mobility within an office, building, or
    campus environment.
  • 802.11 technology achieves this by putting an
Ethernet signal over a radio frequency.
  • 802.11 is similar to your desktop Ethernet
connection, although not designed to replace your
    desktop hard-wired LAN connection.
  • 802.11 is designed to provide mobility for
laptops, allowing users to move about their
    environment maintain LAN connectivity.
  • 802.11 LANs are created by placing an Access
    Point with an antennae
  • which provides a circular Cell of LAN
    signal coverage.
  • Laptops with built-in 802.11 technology, or
    laptops with PC card slots
  • which accept 802.11 cards, can then
    receive the Access Points LAN
  • signal, as well as send a LAN signal back
    to the Access Point.
  • Voila, were networking!!!

UTHSC Wireless LAN
  • 802.11 Wireless Ethernet Standards
  • 802.11a
  • 5.6 gHz RF with a 50-60 ft range
  • 56 mb Ethernet
  • Good/Bad Costly to deploy due to short range
requiring large number of Access Points. Higher
    bandwidth.
  • 802.11b
  • 2.4 gHz RF with a 150-160 ft range
  • 11 mb Ethernet
  • Good/Bad Affordable deployment due to much
increased range requiring fewer access points.
    Low bandwidth.
  • the New Kid on the block
  • 802.11g
  • 2.4 gHz RF with a 100-125 ft range
  • 56 mb Ethernet
  • Good/Bad Same coverage as 802.11b, but with the
    bandwidth of 802.11a.
  • Wireless Nirvana!!!

UTHSC Wireless LAN
  • UTHSC currently has 802.11b wireless LAN coverage
in several buildings on campus providing mobile
LAN connectivity to Faculty, Students Staff.
  • 90 of UTHSCs current wireless LAN
infrastructure is upgradeable to the new 802.11g
technology, providing a path for increasing
bandwidth as needed, while maintaining existing
    802.11b wireless LAN coverage.
  • UTHSC 802.11b wireless LAN coverage includes
  • Alexander Bldg All floors including
    Library
  • Coleman Bldg 1st floor including
    Auditoriums
  • G.E.B. Student Study areas on the 1st,
    2nd 3rd floors
  • Plaza Bldg Lobby Coverage includes
    dining areas
  • S.A.C. All floors including Meeting
    Rooms Fitness Facility (SAC only)
  • Hyman Bldg All floors including
    Chancellors Conference Room
  • A few other areas are covered for
    Clinical Research efforts.

UTHSC Wireless LAN
  • To access the UTHSC 802.11b wireless LAN all you
    need is a Laptop with a built-in 802.11b chipset,
or a Laptop with an 802.11b PC card.
  • To connect youll need to enable the 802.11b
wireless LAN interface in your Laptop. It should
then see the 802.11b LAN signal, requesting the
entry of a Network Key to access the wireless
LAN. The Key info is available from the Help
    Desk the Help Desks webpage.
  • After enabling your 802.11b wireless LAN
interface on your laptop, you will need to
register for a TCP/IP address for your wireless
LAN interface, just as with your hard-wired LAN
connection. And then youre ready to be a UTHSC
    wireless LAN mobile user.
  • This registration also creates your wireless
    authentication profile, assuring only registered
UTHSC Faculty, Students Staff devices are
    accessing the UTHSC wireless LAN.
  • UTHSC wireless LAN utilizes 802.11 WEP (Wireless
Encryption Protocol) 64-bit technology to protect
data during transfer future campus network
    infrastructure upgrades will further increase
    wireless LAN security.
  • UTHSC 802.11b wireless LAN configuration
instructions are available on the Help Desk
    webpage at
  • http//www.utmem.edu/c
    omp/campus/wireless.htm
  • Or you can call the UTHSC Help Desk for
wireless LAN configuration assistance at 8-2222.

  • PC Cards
  • Most any IEEE 802.11b wireless PC card should
work with the UTHSC wireless LAN. UTHSC Network
    Services
  • has tested many PC cards from vendors such as
    Apple, Cisco, Orinoco 3com.
  • UTHSC Network Services recommends the 3com X-jack
PC card, which features a retractable antennae
that allows the card to remain in the laptop
    during transport.
  • 3coms X-jack PC cards are available in both an
    802.11b version (65) an 802.11a/b/g version
    (110).
  • They can be purchased at CDW/Mac-PC Warehouse,
    Global Computing most Internet PC/Mac
    companies.
  • NOTE Many current PDAs Palm PCs
also offer 802.11b wireless LAN capabilities.
