Project Timeline

2001 Russian operators actively discussed the
idea of re-engining. Joint meetings with
Rosaviakosmos (Russian Aerospace Agency), Federal
Aviation Authority of Russia and Cargo Airline
Association were held. All were reluctant to
take on the project. 2002 Volga-Dnepr
Airlines assumed the leadership of the
initiative. The initial step was made at the
Farnborough Air Show 2002, where Volga-Dnepr
and Perm Engine Factory signed a contract for
the delivery of new engines for the first
aircraft. 2003 Volga-Dnepr ordered
development of type design documentation for the
new aircraft and acquired the title to this
documentation for IL-76TD- 90VD type from
Ilyushin Design Bureau. In November Volga-Dnepr
placed an order at Tashkent Aircraft Factory
for production of the first 2 IL-76TD-90VDs. A
ugust 2005 IL-76TD-90VD made its maiden flight.
The aircraft was exhibited at Moscow Air Show
2005. January 2006 IL-76TD-90VD certified under
Chapter 4 noise requirements. May 2006 The
first Quiet aircraft entered into commercial
operation.

10IL-76TD-90VD vs. L100-30 (Hercules) Operational
Costs Comparison
Hercules is a military aircraft with its L100-30
(Hercules) modification certified for commercial
use. Commercial fleet comprises 35 aircraft. The
market capacity served by this fleet has been
estimated at circa 140-150 million for
2004.CONCLUSION IL-76TD-90VD aircraft offers
unique outsize non-standard cargo service and
has no direct rivals in terms of pricing as
compared with existing or prospective ramp
freighters.
11Conclusions
11
IL-76TD-90VD is a unique ramp freighter with
30-50 tonne payload capacity that has no direct
rivals until at least 2015. The overall
requirement for such aircraft will be 15-20
IL-76TD-90VDs by 2015.
