Mythology By Sydney Hansen
  • WARNING THESE MAY NOT BE TRUE!!!!
  • These stories become traditions within cultures,
passed from the lips of an elder to the wondering
ears of the young, living on and on. There really
is no better way to learn a culture's mythology
than to be lucky enough to hear the stories live
from a good storyteller. A good storyteller could
be a grandparent or other relative. Sometimes
storytellers visit schools, museums, or libraries
to pass along their legends. The kinds of stories
that follow contributed to a kind of hysteria
about Some Myths and Legends through the ages.

3
Dragons
  • Lets start with some of the most well known
    Mythological animals on the planet.
  • DRAGONS!!!!
  • Some people believe Dragons are not real. But
some books say Seeing ISNT believing, and its
    true.

4
Fire Dragon
  • FIRE DRAGON The Fire Dragon is the most
extroverted and competitive Dragon. He tends to
push too hard and expects a lot from everyone.
His criticisms are objective and he has the
ability to arouse massive popular support. His
insatiable ambition can make him short-tempered
and intolerant. He is an empire builder who needs
to master his less favorable traits and learn how
to communicate more humbly with people as
    individuals.

5
Earth Dragon
  • EARTH DRAGON The Earth Dragon is a quieter, more
reflective Dragon, He will be appreciative of
other's opinions even if he fails to agree with
them. He is reasonable in his approach to
problems and his leadership is less dictatorial.
He is not given to outbursts of temper, but at
the same time demands respect. He knows the value
of cooperation and is more diplomatic than the
other Dragons. He is ambitious, but his
initiatives are less hurried and more carefully
    thought out.

6
Wood Dragon
  • WOOD DRAGON The Wood Dragon is creative,
imaginative, and inquisitive. He is both a
thinker and a doer and is capable of brilliant
new concepts. His every move is guided by sound
logic. His drive and ambition allow him to put
many of his ideas into practice, nevertheless
this Dragon is capable of concealing his
domination and tries not to offend. He will even
compromise if it is advantages. Although not as
self-centered as other Dragons, he is still
    outspoken and fearless when challenged.

7
Metal Dragon
  • METAL DRAGON The Metal Dragon is the most
strong-willed Dragon. He is inflexible, unbending
and combative. He gives little regard to the
feelings of others. This ruthlessness can result
in a rapid rise to a position of authority, but
often at the cost of destroying important
relationships. It is futile to attempt to
convince him that certain things are simply
undoable. He will go it alone if he can't gain
support. He succeeds because he refuses to accept
    failure.

8
Water Dragon
  • WATER DRAGON The Water Dragon is less selfish
and opinionated than the other Dragons. He is
more inhibited and less power-hungry. He can
accept defeat without recriminations. He makes a
good negotiator as he knows when, where, and how
to apply pressure. He has a tendency to be
over-optimistic and needs to learn how to
relinquish what is unfeasible so that he can
concentrate his energies on the most rewarding
    endeavors.

9
Unicorns
  • Now lets go on to another well known
    Mythological creature..
  • UNICORNS!!
  • Some Unicorns have been forced into hiding
    or turning in to regularHORSES!!

10
Unicorns
  • The unicorn is just one well-known
example of such a mythological creature. Said to
have magical powers in healing and the bringing
of luck, the unicorn was a bearded horse with a
single horn and cloven hooves (like a deer). The
horn was prized for its ability to counteract all
poisons with which it came in contact. Legend
says that only those most pure in heart and soul
may be approached by them. The unicorn is found
in the legends of many cultures, including Irish,
    Persian, Greek, Indian, and Chinese!

11
The EL CHUBRACABRA
  • The El Chubracabra changes its appearance in
    every culture.
  • Like in Mexico he shows as a big green hairy
    monkey!
  • No-one has ever seen the real El Chubracabra, but
we know its out there somewhere.

12
The EL CHUBRACABRA
  • The many different Native American tribes
have the belief that animals in particular, along
with weather and other elements of nature,
possess particular qualities of power and
knowledge. The myth lore of each and all things
serves to show individuals their relationship to
this world and other lives. The Raven and the
Crow is a legend told by the Skagit tribe of
Washington State, warning people to beware of
insincere flattery. You should bring yourself to
read this entertaining tale with a real
    moral-to-the-story!

13
The Chough
  • In Cornwall, England, the legend says that King
Arthur's spirit lives on as the chough, a black
bird with red beak and red claws waiting to
return as leader in human form. ('Nyns Yu Marow
Myghtern Arthur.' Translation 'Not Dead Is The
    Mighty Arthur.')

14
The Pterodactyl
  • Is It a Bird? Is It a Plane? ... No, It's a LOT
    Scarier!
  • We've all heard the old tales and legends of
dragons ... and you probably have heard of the
prehistoric relatives of birds, the Pterodactyl
and Archaeopteryx. Could they still exist?
  • Crypto zoologists have puzzled over this for a
long time. Legends of Pterodactyl sittings in the
Southwest date back more than 100 years even
before scientists had given a name to the
    supposedly extinct reptile!

15
The Pterodactyl
  • One of the earliest recorded incidents occurred
on April 26, 1890, when the Tombstone Epitaph (a
local newspaper) reported that two cowboys had
discovered and shot down a creature described
as a "winged dragon" which resembled a
pterodactyl, only MUCH larger. The cowboys said
its wingspan was 160 feet, and that its body was
more than four feet wide and 92 feet long. The
cowboys cut off the end of the wing to prove the
existence of the creature, but the rest of the
body disappeared. Apparently, so did the wingtip.
  • A century later (September 14, 1983), a paramedic
named James Thompson was driving alongside the
Pecos River Gorge of West Texas when a creature
buzzed his car. Thompson said it had "a five- or
six-foot wingspan and a rough gray hide." Sound
like a pterodactyl? Sure does! Legends have
sprung up locally all along the Rio Grande of a
really big bird that matches Thompson's
    description.
  • And there's more! (This one is REALLY creepy!) In
1990, a young woman from Mesa, Arizona, awoke at
night to find that half of her ear had been
bitten off yikes! Panicked, and with her pillow
covered in blood, she stood up to see what she
could only describe as a "flying reptile" winging
its way across her lawn. Mesa police could only
say "there was just no logical explanation" for
    what had happened ...

16
Vampires
  • Onward to Vampires!
  • Bloody, Gut Ripping, All time cool Monsters.
  • VAMPIRES!!!
  • I VANT TO SUCK VOR BLOOD!!!
  • Haaa Haaa!

17
Vampires
  • Speaking of vampires, what about vampire bats?
Now there's another poor little creature accused
of some pretty scary stuff! The vampire bat has
been portrayed in horror stories as attacking
people and sucking their blood. EEECH! Oh yeah,
and vampires will frequently turn into big bats
with glowing eyes as they stalk their prey, or to
    make a fast getaway.
  • Actually, the vampire is truly a global creature,
with myths coming out of cultures around the
world. To this day, stories flow from Africa,
Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United
States, about the dead rising from their graves
during the night to drink the blood of the
living. The ancient Assyrian "Ekiminu" was
half-vampire and half-ghost. Nowhere, however, is
there more vampire folklore than from the Slavic
gypsy community where dogs, horses, sheep and
snakes all had the potential to become vampires!
  • Vampires could be made in a variety of ways such
as by practicing witchcraft, or if a cat or other
animal jumps over a dead body. Vampires were
supposed to be able to take the form of a bat or
other animal, or even a mist. They were thought
to be able to control creatures like rats and
    wolves.
  • Although most all vampires sleep in coffins or
graves, they were supposed to need to return to
the earth from their homeland each night.
Vampires could not cross running water, see their
reflection in a mirror, enter a place uninvited,
and could not tolerate daylight or the symbol of
the Christian crucifix. One way to deter a
vampire is to scatter seeds upon the ground
reportedly, the vampire would become so involved
in counting every single seed that they would
either lose interest in the victim, or be caught
counting as the sun came up and destroyed them.
Garlic is popular as a vampire repellent. A
vampire could be exterminated by fire, cutting
off its head, or by driving a stake through its
heart. A less violent but perhaps more risky way
to destroy a vampire is to steal his left sock,
fill it with stones and throw it in a river ...
You can try it if you want, but we don't
    recommend it!

18
Protectors
  • Many legends seek to explain weather and other
natural phenomena. In the story "God's Watchdog
of the Iwamatsus in Sumon Shrine", Japanese
villagers are warned to be leave their homes as
soon as possible upon hearing abnormal sounds
which are a sign of an impending landslide.
  • Long, long ago, there was a small village in the
Tochio district of Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
Every night for a week a wolf barked in and
around the village, frightening the inhabitants
enough that they ran away in fear for their
lives. The very next night, a landslide
completely destroyed the village but no one died.
The next morning the people of the village came
together at the shrine of the Iwamatsus which was
the only building in the village not damaged. One
of them cried, "Look! The legs of the wooden
God's watchdog are muddy! That 'barking wolf '
must have been this wooden dog. God sent him to
us as His messenger and saved our lives from the
    disaster!"

Pink Dolphins In Black Water - An Amazon Legend
  • The exotic appearance of the dolphins in
Amazonian's rivers has led to stories that have
become part of the mythology of Brazil. One
legend tells about a man called Bufeo Colorado,
believed to be from a race of gods who dwell in
beautiful underwater cities. Bufeo Colorado would
leave the river at times, taking the form of a
man with one exception. Although always
impeccably dressed, he wears a hat which he never
removes. It is said that if a person catches him
sleeping, and is bold enough to remove his hat,
Bufeo Colorado has what looks like a blow hole on
top of his head! Bufeo Colorado always leaves
before morning, and if followed he can be seen
diving into the Amazon where he again becomes a
dolphin. If one of these gods lures a human down
into the water, the human is said to be so
enchanted that he or she never wants to return to
    land.
  • This intriguing legend has a basis in fact
"bufeo Colorado" is the Latin name of dolphins
native to the Amazon Basin. In English, "bufeo
Colorado" means "funny color" because of the pink
appearance of the dolphins caused by blood
vessels directly under their skin. These dolphins
are found in the Pacaya and Alfaro Rivers which
flow into the Amazon. The rivers are called
"black water" because they are stained the color
of tea by the tannins seeping from decaying
    vegetation in the rainforest.

Garms
  • Really, Really Bad Dogs!
  • Talk about bad dogs! These dogs will make your
canines look like real angels! The monstrous
hound "Garm" has four eyes and his chest is
drenched with blood. He lives in a cave and
guards the entrance to Helheim, the Norse realm
of the dead. Garm is often equated with the wolf
"Fenrir". In Norse mythology Fenrir is a gigantic
and terrible monster in the shape of a wolf. The
gods learned of a prophecy which stated that the
wolf and his family would one day be responsible
for the destruction of the world. To read the
story of how the Norse gods tried to restrain
Fenrir, wait for the next slide. Another story
that you will find listed is a very scary old
English legend which takes place in a castle
haunted by the mysterious Black Dog.

21
Saving the World from Fenrir
  • In Norse mythology "Fenrir" is a gigantic and
terrible monster in the shape of a wolf. One
legend has it that the Norse gods learned of a
prophecy which stated that the wolf and his
family would one day be responsible for the
destruction of the world. In order to prevent
this, they caught the wolf when he was still a
pup and locked him in a cage where he was fed by
    the god of war, Tyr.

22
Saving the World from Fenrir
  • Of course, Fenrir grew up ... When the gods saw
how huge he had grown, they decided that they had
to find a way to make him harmless. They decided
to trick him by challenging his pride, telling
him he was weak, and that he would not be able to
break free if he was chained. Fenrir accepted the
challenge, and allowed himself to be chained.
Unfortunately, he was so powerful that he managed
to break the strongest chains as if they were
    cobwebs!
  • After that, the gods knew that they would need a
magic chain. They ordered a chain made that would
be strong enough to hold the wolf. The result was
a soft, thin ribbon called "Gleipnir". It was
incredibly strong, despite what its size and
appearance might suggest. The ribbon was
fashioned of six strange elements the noise made
by the footfall of a cat, the roots of a
mountain, a woman's beard, the breath of fishes,
the sinews of a bear, and a bird's spittle. Again
the gods tried to trick Fenrir, only this time he
saw how thin the chain was, and said there was no
pride in breaking such a weak chain!
  • Eventually, however, he agreed thinking that
otherwise his strength and courage would be
doubted and the gods chained the wolf with
Gleipnir. No matter how hard Fenrir struggled, he
could not break free from this thin ribbon.
Furious, he vowed to eventually break free and to
wreak the havoc that was prophesied.

23
The Legend of the Black Dog
  • Long ago in England there was a castle which was
always guarded by soldiers. The guard room was
just inside the great entrance of the castle and
a passage led from it, through one of the old
churches, to the Captain of the Guard's room. At
the end of every day, the soldiers took turns
locking the castle gates and carrying the key
through the dark passage back to the Captain.
  • About this time, a big black dog with rough curly
hair would be seen sometimes in one room, next
time in a different room. He did not belong to
anyone there and no one knew anything about him.
But every night, when the candles were lighted in
the guard room and the fire was burning bright,
he would come down the dark passage and lay down
by the hearth. He made no sound, but lay there
until the break of day, when he would get up and
    disappear into the passage.
  • At first the soldiers were terrified of him, but
after a while they got used to the sight of him
and lost some of their fear, though they still
looked upon him as something more than mortal.
While he was in the room the men were quiet and
no bad words were spoken. When the hour came to
carry the key to the Captain, two men would
always go together. No man would face the dark
    passage alone.
  • One night, however, one foolish fellow had drunk
more than was good for him and he began to brag
that he was not afraid of the dog. It was not his
turn to take the keys, but to show how brave he
was he said he would take them alone. He dared
    the dog to follow him.
  • "Let him come!" he shouted, laughing. "I'll see
whether he be dog or devil!" His friends were
terrified and tried to hold him back, but he
snatched up the keys and went out into the
passage. The black dog slowly got up from before
the fire and followed him. There was a deathly
silence in the guard room, no sound was heard but
the dashing of the waves on the steep rocks of
    the castle islet.
  • After a few minutes, there came from the dark
passage the most unearthly screams and howls. The
soldiers looked at each other in horror, but not
one dared to move to see what was going on.
Presently they heard steps, and the rash fellow
came back into the room. His face was pale and
twisted with fear. He spoke not a word, then or
afterwards. In three days he was dead, and nobody
ever knew what had happened to him that fearful
night ... The black dog has never been seen
    again!

24
It Might Not Be a Fish, But It's Swimming Toward
Us ... !
  • There's something in the water! ... It isn't
"Jaws", in fact we don't know what it is! The
world's oceans, seas, lakes and rivers hold many
mysteries and, according to persistent reports,
    many unidentified, uncatchable creatures.

25
The Loch Ness
  • There have been numerous reports of serpent or
dragon-like critters in the waters of Scotland's
Loch Ness, Canada's Lake Okanagan and in the
United States the mid-Atlantic region of
Chesapeake Bay, New York State's Lake Champlain,
Alkali Lake in Nebraska, Alaska's Illiamna Lake,
and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Washington
State. Some of these creatures have been seen for
hundreds of years and occasionally people report
having seen multiple creatures at once, leading
to the theory that there are actual families of
unknown species which are reproducing and
continuing to startle, amaze and fascinate those
who catch a glimpse or the rare photo or
    videotape of them.
  • Scotland's "Nessie" may be the most known of all
these unknown water creatures. The long water
serpent with the three humps and a head like
"Dino the Dinosaur" is similar to one reported to
be in Lake Champlain. The Chesapeake Bay's
"Chessie" is similar. Eyewitnesses say Chessie is
a long, dark serpent-like creature, anywhere from
25-30 feet long with a humped back. Chessie is
alternately described as being dark brown or dark
gray. Another "large, dark colored animal with a
long neck and a humped back" lives in Canada's
Lake Okanagan. And yet another dinosaur-like
creature was reported to be in Washington State's
Strait of Juan de Fuca. Like Nessie, it had three
humps, but this one was described as also having
    a snake-like head and a floppy mane!
  • Far away from North America and Europe, South
Africans in a remote village are reportedly
living in fear of a man-eating river creature
said to have characteristics of both a fish and a
horse. The agricultural minister in the Eastern
Cape region told the legislature that the beast
had gobbled up seven victims in the Umzimhlava
River. Some locals are recalling the "mamlambo"
which is supposed to be a beast from Xhosa tribal
mythology which is said to live in rivers and
provide great wealth if caught ... Just don't let
    it get you first!

26
Werewolves and Werewhats?!
  • Those poor wolves! ... The dog's cousin, the
wolf, has inspired lots of horrific tales through
the ages probably borne of a deep fear of
wolves which have been thought to be unnaturally
cruel, ferocious, treacherous, and to have huge
appetites. One of the most known legends based on
the wolf is that of the "werewolf". A werewolf is
a human being that changes into a wolf (usually
the result of an evil curse).

27
Werewolves
  • The werewolf is the most common "were" creature,
but there are others that are less known! In a
place called Wallachia there were weredogs.
Mexico and Peru had weretigers, were-eagles and
wereserpents ... However, Abyssinia and Egypt had
the biggest collection of were-animals, including
    werehyenas, wereleopards, weretigers,
    werejaguars, werelions, were-elephants,
    werecrocodiles, were-alligators, and even
    weresharks!
  • Most such legends, though, are about werewolves
... But, like lots of other yarns passed on
through the ages, werewolf stories vary greatly.
For example, some say werewolves are just men
wearing a wolves' heads but others say a
werewolf is a man who turns partially, or all the
way, into a wolf. Werewolves are usually men, but
can also be women and children. Being a werewolf
can be voluntary, but not always ... It can also
be hereditary ... or it can occur as a
punishment, such as an evil spell, or curse ...
or even as the unfortunate victim of another
    werewolf.

28
Werewolves
  • There have been many scary old movies made about
werewolves you must have seen at least ONE! ...
You know the story some poor guy stumbling
through a misty old graveyard ... under the light
of a full moon ... suddenly, tufts of hair begin
to grow on the back of his hands ... then, fangs
sprout from his mouth ... and the half-crazed
man-creature lifts his head up, glaring at the
moon ... and then he ... HOOOOOWWWLS!
  • It is said that men born on Christmas Eve become
werewolves, as do murdered men. There are a
number of other ways a person can become a
werewolf, including drinking from haunted streams
or pools, or out of the footprint of a savage
wolf. You can also become a werewolf by eating
the flesh of a wild wolf, or by sleeping outside
on a summer's night, on a Wednesday or Friday, as
the light of the full moon shines on your face.
  • Werewolves in Germany, Greece, and Serbia are
thought to become vampires after death. Romanian
legend has it that not only did werewolves become
vampires after death, but vampires could also
turn themselves into werewolves. As early as 970,
a man named Baianus was thought to be able to
turn himself into a wolf. It was said of Baianus,
"He changed himself into a Wolf so often as he
list, or into the likenesses of any other beast,
or in such sort that he could not be discerned of
    any man."

29
Werewolves
  • Around 1200, an Irish priest met a wolf which
requested that the priest accompany him back to
his dying wife in a nearby village. The village
natives had been cursed for their wickedness by
St. Natalis, "and were compelled to take two by
two a wolf-shape for seven years, returning to
their own form at the end of that time." The
priest gave the final sacrament only when the
she-wolf moved her skin down a little, proving
that she was indeed an old woman.
  • Claudia Gaillard was one of the hundreds of
unfortunate souls brought to trial by the
    witch-finder Henry Boguet. According to
witnesses, she was seen behind a bush assuming
the form of a wolf without a tail. For this great
sin, she was tortured but according to witnesses
no one ever saw her shed a single tear. Claudia
was then burned to death at the stake.

30
Werewolves
  • In 1589, Peter Stubb had one of the most famous
werewolf trials in history. After being stretched
on the rack, Stubb confessed to having practiced
black magic since he was twelve years old. He
claimed the devil had given him a magical belt
which enabled him to change into the likeness of
a wolf with large eyes that shone like fire in
the night, a wide mouth with sharp teeth, a huge
body and mighty paws. To turn back into his human
form, all Stubb had to do was remove the belt.
For twenty-five years, Stubb had been a
    self-described "insatiable bloodsucker" who ate
goats, lambs, sheep, men, women, and children.
Stubb was finally caught when hunters ran him
down in his wolf form. He foolishly took off his
belt and was recognized. Peter Stubb was
sentenced to a very terrible death.
  • There is the 17th century case a 13 year-old boy
who reportedly turned himself into a werewolf. He
admitted to some young women that he wore a wolf
skin and described eating dogs, sheep and even
people. He allegedly told a story of how he sold
his soul to the devil. The boy was imprisoned in
a Franciscan Friary in Bordeaux where he would
run around on all fours, eat garbage and
    generally act like a wolf.

31
Black Cat Ghost Stories
  • The room he sleeps in used to be his sister's
room. She had been begging him for a long time to
trade rooms and he thought it was because he had
the bigger room. He went along with the trade
anyway, but now every once in a while he will
wake up in the middle of the night, look up on
the bookcase and see a pair of cat eyes looking
at him. This isn't so strange, except that he
sleeps with the door and windows closed, so
there's no way for a cat to get in and no light
    for its eyes to reflect!

Story 2
  • Finally, the same family had another cat when the
writer was young. This cat was also very loved
and used to like to sleep on the writer's back.
Eventually, this cat was also put to sleep and
deeply mourned by its owner. A few years later,
as the writer would be falling asleep, he would
feel the weight of a cat on his back right
where the pet cat used to sleep. Looking back,
there would be no cat to be seen but the weight
    would still be there!

Story 3
  • The same person tells the story of a time, later,
when he got up in the middle of the night to go
to the bathroom. Near the bathroom sat a cat
blocking the doorway. The writer bent down to pet
the cat and it disappeared right before his eyes!
This was a spot where the pet cat frequently used
    to spend time.

Story 4
  • Another Internet ghost story teller also believes
animals, like humans, can be ghosts. He tells the
story of his family's old cat which became sick.
Because the cat was in such pain, the family
chose to put the cat to sleep. The first night
was especially hard for the family and they were
very sad about losing their cherished pet, but
that night as the story teller was lying in bed,
the cat walked right through the door! She was
healthy and young looking again! The cat also
visited another family member that night maybe
to say good-bye, but maybe not ...

Story 5
  • At other times, when he has been in the house
alone, he looks up occasionally from what he is
doing to find a black cat sitting and staring at
him. The family does have three cats ... but none
of them are black! The black cat has also been
seen by his mother and even his dog will "chase"
the black cat but none of the family's real
    cats.
