• Ice Age glaciers carve out the cave 25 miles
  south of modern-day Salzburg, Austria in the Alps
• Ice forms from inflow and outflow of air in
  summer and winter
• Ice gradually builds up every year to form the
  worlds largest ice caves

• Discovered in 1879 by Anton Posselt
• Not completely explored until 1912 by Alexander
  Von Mörk
• Opened to tourists in 1920

• The Experience
• Cave entrance at 5,500 ft. in the Alps
• Temperatures average below 32 F inside
• Cave itself ascends 440ft. (over 700 wood steps
  constructed over the ice)
• No electricity every third person carries an
  open-flame carbide lamp
