Students will spend the day touring Salzburg
Castle (above left), which dates from Roman
times but was chiefly erected in the 11th

The amphitheater was carved out of stone was the
first operatic performance north of the Alps.

gardens of Mirabell Palace (right), built by
Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his mistress Salome
Alt. In the evening we will attend a concert
in the hall in the Palace, where Mozart often
performed.

Day 4 (March 16) Bus Excursion to Bavaria
Salzburgs proximity to the Bavarian border (less
than ten kilometers) offers an excellent
opportunity to tour the breathtaking alpine
landscape of the Berchtesgaden region. Tour buses
leave regularly from Salzburg. Students will
also see the darker side of the regions history
with a visit to the Obersalzburg Documentation
Center (above right), established by the
Institute for Contemporary History at the
University of Munich and located on the former
site of Hitlers alpine villa. The Center
contains an excellent museum that chronicles the
crimes of the Nazi regime.
