Ratification of the Constitution
  • Ratification- to approve.
  • The Constitution was adopted in its original form
on September 17, 1787 by the Constitutional
    Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • After its adoption the long, difficult process of
    getting the Constitution ratified began.

3
Ratification of the Constitution
  • Each state held their own mini constitutional
convention to look at the new constitution and
decide if they wanted to approve it.
  • 9 out of the 13 states had to approve the new
constitution for it to go into effect.

4
Ratification of the Constitution
  • The decision to ratify the Constitution caused a
great deal of discussion and debate in the 13
    states.
  • Some people were for ratifying the new
constitution while others were against it.

5
Ratification of the Constitution
  • Federalists- Were people who supported
    ratification of the Constitution.
  • They liked the new constitution because it
created a stronger national (Federal) government.

Ratification of the Constitution
  • Federalist Papers- A series of newspaper
articles written by James Madison, Alexander
Hamilton, and John Jay trying to convince people
in New York to support the ratification of the
    Constitution.
  • People all over the country read these papers,
and they were extremely helpful in stating the
    Federalists position and getting the
    Constitution ratified.

7
Ratification of the Constitution
  • Anti-Federalists (Democratic-Republicans)
  • They were against ratifying the Constitution.
They felt the new constitution gave the national
    government too much power.
  • They especially disliked the idea of giving the
    President so much power.
  • They wanted the states to have more power.
  • Wanted a Bill of Rights added to the
Constitution to protect the basic rights of all
    citizens.
