2Ratification of the Constitution
- Ratification- to approve.
- The Constitution was adopted in its original form
on September 17, 1787 by the Constitutional
Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. - After its adoption the long, difficult process of
getting the Constitution ratified began.

- Each state held their own mini constitutional
convention to look at the new constitution and
decide if they wanted to approve it. - 9 out of the 13 states had to approve the new
constitution for it to go into effect.

- The decision to ratify the Constitution caused a
great deal of discussion and debate in the 13
states. - Some people were for ratifying the new
constitution while others were against it.
5Ratification of the Constitution
- Federalists- Were people who supported
ratification of the Constitution. - They liked the new constitution because it
created a stronger national (Federal) government.

- Federalist Papers- A series of newspaper
articles written by James Madison, Alexander
Hamilton, and John Jay trying to convince people
in New York to support the ratification of the
Constitution. - People all over the country read these papers,
and they were extremely helpful in stating the
Federalists position and getting the
Constitution ratified.

- Anti-Federalists (Democratic-Republicans)
- They were against ratifying the Constitution.
They felt the new constitution gave the national
government too much power. - They especially disliked the idea of giving the
President so much power. - They wanted the states to have more power.
- Wanted a Bill of Rights added to the
Constitution to protect the basic rights of all
citizens.

- Bill of Rights- Was added to the Constitution as
the first ten amendments (changes). It
guaranteed basic rights to all citizens. This
convinced several states to approve the
Constitution. - Written by James Madison.
