From independence through at least the 1860s,
relations with Britain were the USs most
important foreign policy concern because the
British have the capital to stabilize the US
economy goods the US needs, especially
textiles, iron, steel, and manufactured
items the navy to enforce shipping laws the

to the US

After the Jay Treaty (1795), US relations with
Britain improved, while the US dealt with the
Quasi-War with France. After 1805, however,
Anglo-American relations deteriorated again, with
