Early Life
  • Thomas Paine was born January 29, 1737 in
    Thetford, England.
  • He was the son of a poor Quaker.
  • He was poor and received very little schooling.

Growing Up Years
  • Thomas started working at the age of thirteen.
  • Then he got married.
  • His first wife died and he got legally separated
    from his second wife.
  • Thomas Paine never had any children. He was alone
    and poor in 1774.

Importance During Revolution
  • Thomas Paine gained friendship of Benjamin
    Franklin,then in London, he advised him to go to
    America.
  • Thomas was working for the cause of independence.
  • In 1776 he published his book called, Common
    Sense. A brilliant statement of the colonists
    cause.
  • Thomas Paines book became a best-seller, it also
    made Americans believe that America should be
    independent and free.

Later Years
  • In England Thomas Paine published a book called,
    Rights of Men.
  • Paine returned to France and became a French
    citizen.But his friends lost power in the
    convention.
  • Thomas Paine then was expelled from the
    convention, deprived of French citizenship,and
    also went to prison.
  • While in prison Thomas worked on a book called,
    Age of Reason.It stated his views of religion.
  • Paine was freed thanks to efforts of James Monroe.

Now
  • During Paines last years, he was poor and ill.
  • Thomas Paine died in poverty on June 8, 1809.He
    was buried on his farm in New Rochelle.
  • Then, ten years later, Thomas Paines body was
    removed to England. The location of his grave is
    still unknown to this very day.
