  • The North-

  • Established a protective Tariff
  • Re-charter for a national bank
  • Internal Improvements-roads, canals, bridges,
    etc.

Missouri Compromise 1820
  • Maine enters the US as a free state.
  • Missouri enters as a slave state.
  • North of 36 30 was free, south was slave.
  • This avoided increasing tension between the north
    and the south

Andrew Jackson
  • Jackson is elected president in 1824
  • Jacksonian Democracy- Common people have a place
    in government
  • Spoils System- Jackson awarded jobs to his
    supporters after his victory.

Native Americans
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830- The US forced many
    tribes to move west.
  • Worcester v. Georgia
  • Trail of Tears- The Cherokee nation was forced to
    walk 800 miles to Oklahoma.

Nullification Crisis
  • John C. Calhoun developed the Doctrine of
    Nullification
  • Jackson was primed to use force against S.C. but
    Henry Clay made a compromise to avoid violence.

Tippecanoe and Tyler Too
  • William Henry Harrison and John Tyler defeated
    Martin Van Buren to become president
  • Harrison soon died making Tyler President in 1840.

Manifest Destiny
  • The belief that the US had the God given right to
    expand from ocean to ocean.
  • Many trails to the west were blazed and many
    began traveling westward.

Texan Independence
  • Mexico wanted Americans to settle in Texas
    territory.
  • Anglos soon outnumbered Mexicans in Texas.
  • Cultural differences caused the Texans to rebel.

Remember the Alamo
  • In the Battle of the Alamo, the Texan rebels were
    defeated by Gen. Santa Anna
  • Sam Houston and company took revenge by killing
    630 Mexican soldiers in 18 minutes at San
    Jacinto.
  • Texas became independent in 1836.

Mexican American War
  • Once Texas entered the US in 1845, war seemed
    imminent.
  • In 1846, the Republic of California was
    proclaimed but was quickly included into US
    territory.
  • General Zachary Taylor stormed through Mexico and
    the war was over in roughly 1 year.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848
  • Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande as the border
    between Texas and Mexico.
  • The US paid 15 million for the Mexican Cession.

California Gold Rush
  • 49ers- Gold was discovered at Sutters mill in
    1848.
  • Thousands rushed to California in the hopes of
    striking it rich.
  • The Californian economy was completely
    transformed.
