SLAVERY DEBATE BEGINS

• U. S. has completed Manifest Destiny
• What will these new lands be? Will they be free
  or slave?
• Missouri asks to be admitted to the Union.
  Adding it will upset balance of free and slave
  states. Missouri Compromise is written and it
  says all lands north of 36 30 degree latitude
  line will be free, except for Missouri.
  Everything south of the line will be slave.

1848BIG YEAR

• We win the Mexican War and get new lands in
  Mexican Cession.
• We get a new president. He is our 12th
  PresidentZachary Taylor. (He is a war hero from
  the Mexican War)

CALIFORNIA

• CA asks to be admitted to the Union as a free
  state.
• South gets mad and South Carolina threatens to
  SECEDEWITHDRAW MEMBERSHIP FROM A GROUP.
• Compromise of 1850 is written. It makes CA a
  free state and divides New Mexico Territory into
  New Mexico and Utah. Popular Sovereignty will
  decide whether New Mexico and Utah will be slave
  or free states.

NEW PRESIDENT

• 1850Zachary Taylor dies. Millard Fillmore, his
  Vice-President, takes his place. Fillmore is our
  13th President.
• Why did Taylor die?he got sick on the 4th of
  July and 5 days later he died. That is all we
  know.

UNCLE TOMS CABIN

• It was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852.
  Her goal was to show the evils of slavery. The
  book caused Americans to view slavery as a moral
  issue and increased support for the abolitionist
  movement.
• Sold millions of copies and was translated into
  several languages. (pg. 467 in book)
