• Franklin Pierce 1852 Democrat.
• Stephen Douglas wanted railroad from Chicago.
• Kansas Nebraska Act divided the rest of the
  Louisiana Purchase into 2 territories Kansas
  and Nebraska. Popular sovereignty.

Bleeding Kansas

• Anti-slavery and proslavery rushed to Kansas.
• People crossed over from Missouri to vote
  pro-slavery. Violence ensued.
• John Brown decided it was his duty to strike
  terror in the hearts of proslavery.
• Pottawatomie Massacre. -killed 5 proslavery
  civil war broke out.
• Congress- Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner
  unconscious after a speech which insulted Senator
  Andrew Pickens of SC.
