New Divisions

• Republican Party formed. 1854
• James Buchanan won presidency(democrat)
• Dred Scott Decision 1856 Supreme Court.
• Roger B. Taney Chief Justice African
  Americans not citizens and could not sue.

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates

• Abraham Lincoln joined Republican Party in 1856.
• While running for IL U.S. Senate, he debated his
  opponent Stephen Douglas.
• Douglas won, but Lincoln became known.

The Raid on Harpers Ferry

• John Browns Raid wanted to start a slave
  uprising . 20 men entered a federal aresenal and
  tried to recruit slaves from surrounding farms in
  VA.
• Robert E. Lee sent to capture rebels.
• John Brown convicted of treason, murder and
  hanged.

The Election of 1860

• Lincoln won as a moderate would not spread
  slavery, but would not abolish it.
• The South feared he would destroy their economy
  and society by abolishing slavery.
• 4 days after election, SC withdraws from the
  union (secession).

The Confederate States of America

• 1861 MS, FL,AL,GA,LA, and TX seceded from the
  Union.
• Feb. 4th delegates met AL to establish the
  Confederate States of America.
• Jefferson Davis elected President.
• Many challenges for him detail man and friends
  sometimes affected good judgement.
