Assessing our diversity
  • Our schools sites for 21st CCLC are composed of
    over 65 minority students
  • The rate of growth of Hispanic in Des Moines is
    62 in the last 3 years.
  • 27 different languages or dialects spoken in Des
    Moines Public School District.

Community Assets Mapping
  • Each neighborhood schools has a different and
    unique personality.
  • Different way of coming together.
  • Different way of receiving information and giving
    information.

For example
  • 60 of students attending McKinley school are
    Spanish speaking
  • At McKinley School our schedule of classes and
    Parent/Teacher survey were produced both in
    Spanish and English
  • During Teacher/Parent conferences bilingual
    personnel were present to help with enroll of
    students for 21st CCLC classes.
  • Family Night were focus on parent involvement.
  • Information on health issues, crafts and
    entertainment was provided.

  • Special Events Chuck Davis African Dance
    ensemble
  • All sites worked on African Mask and decoration
    for Civic Center performance.
  • Students audition to be part of the dance
    ensemble.
  • Keeping in touch with our Board and Senator and
    local leaders.
